New mobile need advice??
on: June 05, 2014, 05:02:17 AM
Ok y'all I am going to make the leap in the morning and go to Verizon (the most awful of all places on earth) and get a new cell phone.  The trouble is, with Verizon, unlimited data packages are no longer an option. I currently have unlimited data and after tomorrow it's going to be gone. I'm going to be limited to 2gb of data from now on. When I am at home I use wifi, and don't spend much time on the web other than on here and streaming podcasts. After much consideration I've decided to stick with apple and pick up the iPhone 5s. Mainly for the 64gb storage capacity, since I won't be able to stream podcasts I figure I can just download a bunch to the phone without worrying about filling up my phone.

Do any of you guys know any apps that keep track of your data usage and maybe alert you when you are getting low on gb's? I know that sometime ago there were a couple available from the android market place.

I've also decided on the lifeproof case, my current iPhone is a couple of years old and it still works. But it has definitely seen better days. Do any of you have experience with lifeproof? Are they as dependable and tough as they claim? My wife has one on her phone but the most extreme environment it sees is a 3 year old tossing it around. I work in a pretty rough area so it's going to have to be pretty tough. Are they worth the extra $100?

Thanks for the help guys.

Cellular data tracking is a built-in feature, but I'm not sure that it is set up to be able to generate alerts.

I don't have experience with Lifeproof specifically, although they look reasonably solid.  I've had good luck with Otterbox; it has saved my iPhone from what likely would have been a grisly end on more than one occasion, and the protection provided by a decent case is well worth the extra money IMO.

Hey McGill,
This doesn't help you if you need a new phone right now, but the 5s is coming to the end of its cycle. Based on the Macrumors buyers guide it's probably three months away from a new version (it's normally regularly August/Sept I think).

If you can't wait, the 5s is a great phone. I love mine. Big step up from the 4 that I had.

I've only got a 2.5GB data plan and I stream a few hours of podcasts a day (I do a lot of driving) and don't use it all up. So consider that too.

Sorry can't help with the other questions.

There are quite a few apps available for tracking data useage.

I use one called WiFiMan. It lets you set your monthly allowance and 4 alerts to warn you.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

This is one of the few positives of Verizon. One of their plan options includes the option to trade in your phone at 6 months for the newer model. Although I can't think of too many things that apple can do to improve the current iPhone.

Larger screens (4.7 and 5.5) and faster A8 chip for starters.
