How sharp is your plane?
on: May 28, 2014, 05:26:16 AM
I thought I was good at sharpening since I can get shavings like this.

Then I saw this, I'm going to go crawl under a rock now.  :o

Wow, and when you think about just how big/small a micron is ...

The thinnest part of shaving in 1st post is about 0.06 mm per my cheap caliper, about 7 times thicker than the ones in video!

I must admit I had no idea there was such a thing as a Planing Competition, but I would definitely go to one to watch. That's insane how thin they get that wood.
I'm the milk man!

First thought, why would you need shavings that thin? :o

Second thought, what kind of wood is that that you can make these kind of shavings?

Third thought, great respect for the sharpening job.

:D

I sure never would have guess there would be competitions on wood planes.

Whenever I used one was to true up a door and removing more material at a time was better than less material, but I was doing far from precision work.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

Me neither, but this is very benign compare to the more weird competition and game shows the japanese has. Search for japanese game show on youtube to see what weird stuff you can come up with.  :P

I played with mine a bit more and got down to 0.04 mm, but my micrometer only has a resolution of 0.01 so not sure how accurate that is.

On the other hand I found my plane sole isn't anywhere near flat, so I threw it on belt sander and made it a bit better, but it's just too much pain to grind so I'll live with it.
