Any love for the Freestyle?
on: June 04, 2014, 07:35:59 PM

So...any love for the Freestyle?

I'm quietly impressed by this little tool! Unlike the Skelitool, the Freestyle doesn't promise much...it is what it is: folding pliers with a knife( or a knife with folding pliers)

I can see this being a handy mate to a good SAK,offering a hard working liner lock knife, and an easily pocketable package. It could be handy in the garden too.
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I have one and like it fine.  But I think it may not get a ton of love around here because when compared to the Juice S2, the latter is the virtually the same weight (4.5 oz. for the Freestyle vs. 4.6 oz for the S2.), is shorter in the pocket, and has more utility (the addition of 4x drivers, scissors, can opener and bottle opener).  So the Freestyle is cool from an aesthetic perspective, but falls short in the utility department relative to the S2.  I do think the Freestyle would make a good companion to a SAK, in order to get the plier function.  And carrying one just because you like it is plenty reason enough. Just my take on things.

I do like it. When i recieved it first, i thought i would not even open it. But i am so glad i did. Nice decent size pliers, and good size blade. I dont need that carabiner/bottle opener and bit driver like skele has. Freestyle is great combo with something like SAK, or even with another plier based multitool.
Weight is equal to 4-5 layer sak, but you can do so much more of this size pliers. Have to say, that size is good, and curved handles give good grip.
I am so glad i opened that blister...

I have one. Can't remember when I carried it last. Maybe saw a week of carry in the last year and a half since I got it. I agree with the powerful noodle, in it's weight class, the S2 and pretty much any Juice beats it for usability. And I prefer the Juice pliers, kind of feel stronger.

However if you need quick access to the tool it has what all Juices lack and a lot of members here wished for a long time, the pocketclip. In combination with the OHO locking blade it does make for a nice tool. Not to be carried as your single tool though, maybe best paired with the Vic Explorer for the screwdrivers and scissors. :tu:

I was surprised how much I liked mine TBH, especially as I'm not a big Skeletool fan.  As long as I thought of it as a good OHO knife with a bonus pair of pliers I really don't think I had any grounds for complaints.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I like the freestyle a lot. The shape of it makes it glide into my pocket very nicely.
Like the shape of the knife. The pliers are small but capable. I have the cx version as well which is even better with a PE knife.

Yes the skeletool does have a locking blade, if you get one my I suggest getting a bit extension, the driver is kind of awkward on its own.    " awkward for me anyways "

I had a Freestyle for a bit, paired it with a Super Tinker at the store.  It was fine for what it was, but then I started to get more into the multi side of things, and it was part of the first trade I ever made here.  For it I got my first MP, and we all know where that lead..... ::)

Just picked up a BNIP Freestyle CX at the NEX Pearl Harbor. Goes along well with my Skeletool CX.

I'll probably have it in one of my backpacks or slingbags as a backup as I do with the Skeletool CX already.

Did the Freestyle ever come in a plain edge?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

There was a Freestyle CX at one point.

I never got on with my Freestyle and to date it's the only MT in my collection I've sold. There was no driving or prying capability, so useless by itself and if I'm going to carry two things I get a better pair of pliers, a better knife and a better selection of drivers by carrying my C33t+ bladeless Rebar combination.

I bought a Freestyle and I'm  not a fan of it. I might have carried it three times. If it had a screwdriver I might like it a bit more. tom.  8)

Same. I bought one for my dad but gave it a go. For its size it's heavy, weird shaped and clunky. Shoulda got him a skeletool. He seems to like it though which is what matters.

I'd like to get my hands on a cx.

I think it would work out well backed up with the right sak.

I wish it came a larger blade but that's just me being picky.

Does the Freestyle have the same shape and size of blade as the Skeletool ?
are they interchangeable ?

They are basically same tool. Only difference, Skeletools carabiner and bit driver.

Though it number of tools is limited.  But if you're wearing a nice suit and discretion is a must.  There's nothing better :tu:

I wanted to like the Freestyle, it's so small and I like the shape and the blade... but it's very unfriendly to lefties- both for opening and closing the blade  :(

Everything is relative.  If you encounter a need for a light duty plier or blade, and have nothing but a Freestyle on you, then its awesome.  It has saved the day.  But compared to its more utilitarian siblings, and from a purely objective perspective, it falls short.  I don't have any idea what the sales numbers are for the Freestyle, but I would not be surprised if it joined the retired lineup sooner rather than later.  If the Kick, Fuse and Blast can disappear (though I know they were supplanted to large degree by the Rebar), it could certainly be the fate of the Freestyle as well.  I would much rather see a knifeless Fuse, Blast, etc. in the current lineup than the Freestyle.  But Mr. Tim doesn't ask for my opinion.  If he did, we would have a totally revamped Juice lineup, a Rebar with scissors instead of a can opener, or a mini Rebar.   :)
