Loving That Swiss Champ XRS. =]
Very Cool And Useful As Hell. =] If I Had One Of Those... The Rest Would Certainly Get Less Attention Lol.
Though, Not Too Sure I Could Give Up Carrying My Explorer And Classic.

Now I Just Need Blue G-10 Handles On My Explorer... Or Blue Alox Handles... And The Thing Would Be Beyond Perfect.

After a couple learning experiences repinning some frozen up junk spartans and such, I decided to work on my EDC. I wanted to see if it was possible to fit my most used tools all on one knife:

knife
random screwdrivers, mostly a long thin philips #0.
scissors
pliers
pen
tweezers
USB flash drive of some type
bent paperclip for pushing out CDs

I didn't need the can/bottle openers or the awl, so that layer went in the parts bin. I also don't really use the corkscrew, but since it holds the mini driver and there's already a philips bit with the CT, it might as well stay. I like the look of some of the more exotic woods, bloodwood, for instance, but I was waiting on shipping on that, and had this walnut (I think? Was just a board in the garage, seems like walnut, but I'm not 100% sure.) just sitting on a shelf in the garage. So I thought I'd try and see what mistakes I could make.

I need to find a better long thin screwdriver to convert to a bit, this was a cheap one from a set from china that probably cost <$1 total. I smashed the handle, flattened it out until it fits fairly tightly, took a motherboard riser hex screw thingy, drilled it out, filed it down, and stuck it on the screwdriver with a bit of glue to stabilize it while it's in the bit driver.  It works ok, stays nice and solid in the bit driver, but the tip isn't as precise as I'd like.. but this is just my prototype knife anyway, so no worries.

Since the pen and tweezers(and straight pin) fit on one scale, I could do what I wanted with the other, so I looked around for a usb flash drive small enough to fit in a scale. The Verbatim Tuff 'n' Tiny works nicely.. something like 2mm thick by 14mm by 31mm. To keep it in the scale and cover the slot in the side, I made a small wood block with a hole thru the middle, the CD drive opener paper clip holds it in place quite nicely. I might rework the end of that a bit, not sure what to do with it, but folded over like this, I keep bending it when I use the scissors and forget to rotate the clip first. :P

Once I got the scales cut and sanded down to where I wanted, the black plastic of the bit holder looked out of place, and I wanted to fit the extra long bit in there anyway, so I remade it from the wood as well.

Anyway, I'll stop talking and show you PICS:

Holy smokes Glenn, that is inspiring! I've been mulling around with the idea of making the bit holder in carbon fiber wondering if it would work and you went and did it in walnut. Seems to work just fine and looks cool too.  :tu:

Yeah, it works ok, though you have to watch that pin more than the others when you peen it.. I got it slightly tighter than I wanted, and it doesn't move as freely as the original. Maybe add some paper washers or something, and remove them once you're done, just for a little extra give. I might try a little silicon spray, or maybe a little more sanding, if it doesn't loosen up from general use. On this one, I really don't care, I guess, since.. well, pics coming of my actual EDC in a few minutes, and you'll see why.

Next thing I'd like to do is put the CT bit driver on an 84mm, which would need a custom bit holder to even remotely fit. Since the pins aren't in the same spot, I'll have to put filler pins on that layer only, from liner to liner, I think.. which means less torque, but most of the screws I use it on aren't that tight anyway, so I'm not too worried about that. Still working on design, and trying to find an 84mm scissors I won't feel guilty using. :-[

OK, here it is, pretty much a copy of the walnut one above, except I love the look of bloodwood and brass together, and this turned out 10x as amazing as I expected when I started. Working bloodwood is like working metal, a file works amazingly well when working it, such a hard wood. I was scared of it at first, worried about allergies and such, but I had no trouble with that.
My camera picks up every little tiny thing on this, flaws and scratches I can't see with my eyes. I wish I'd have had this camera when I was making it to pick up tiny flaws, would have been awesome. Oh well, I'm waaay too OCD about things like that. ::) The one thing I can't seem to capture is the shine, of both the wood and the brass. Also holding on to this is just amazing, feels like it belongs in my hand. No box on a shelf for this one. ;)
I used a small blade on this instead of the combo tool, since I didn't have a spare at the time, but I find I never use it anyway. I could also probably get rid of the pliers, though it's been used a couple times. What I do miss is a nail file, actually. If I can get the bit driver working on an 84mm frame, I can steal the nail file from a cadet and use that. Ah well, just have to wait and see.

I'd like to find a brass paper clip for that part, just to match everything else.. also the mini driver looks out of place with it's grey plastic, but I don't have a piece of brass that big around. I'll keep looking though, might find something somewhere. A brass straight pin should complete the theme.

Enjoy!

Wow, very nice work! I always found the plastic bit holder rather ugly. This looks so much better! I want a stainless steel or aluminium one.
