Nice mod. :tu:

However, if you swap the pliers and scissors layer positions, you don't need the extra liner next to the scale. :pok:
Hahaha thanx Hiraethus, please don't remind me about that extra thickness. I realized that when I put the scales on.

But I love the tools combination. For the next mod I want to make a Compact with backside philips screwdriver.

The redundant apostrophe in this thread's title is annoying me.

How is it redundant?  Mod's is a contraction of Modifications. Thats one of the apostrophe's main jobs. And the other I just used, indicating possession.

Good point PTR - And true  :tu:
Although I think I prefer mods even if it is not grammatically correct  :o

- But you missed an apostrophe in your sentence above!  ;)
Sorry guys - 'OCD Smart Alec' mode kicking in - But I could not resist it

Anyone spot it ???  :D

EDIT: Oh this is bugging me now
Maybe mod is a word in its own right and therefore mods is correct without the '
It certainly appears here as Definition 3 of mod – although it is labelled as informal !
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/mod
It does not appear in my old hardcopy ‘Oxford English Dictionary’

If mod's (plural) should have an apostrophe, then so should mod' (singular).  That doesn't seem right.  I think mod would be a "clipped form" rather than a contration, like lab or disco, so shouldn't have an apostrophe.

Yeah I always wondered why the Compact with less tools cost more then some SAKs with more.

My friend just bought new Compact a week ago for his mod. It's about IDR 488.000 here (US$ 37.5).

Thin SAK with lots of function, maybe that's the cause.

The Compact is a very nice small SAK with a lot of function but I still wished they had a better (lower) pricetag ??? :D

There are a couple of Compacts for sale, along with some other SAKs, here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,67266.0.html :pok:

If I had $100 I'd be all over it. :(

The plus scales add a bit to the price, but my assumption has always been that the hook with nail file has to be carved out with a unicorn horn or something.

Hi Shibafu,
Thanks so much for this post and information.
Whilst I have often used the clipped form - I never knew I was doing so.    ;)
And it certainly seems to apply to 'mod' !!  :tu:

It's amazing - You don't just learn about MTs at MTo - You learn about English grammar  :D
Who could ever forget NNR's post about the past perfect tense !!

Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm from Indonesia and had been a lurker for a while.  Just recently registered. I'm a novice at SAK mods. I finally took the plunge and tried modding a few months back based on useful information derived from this forum.

Attached are mods I've done so far. Planning to do more mods in the future.  Cheers.

My first attempt at an alox mod.  It's a Pioneer X with the Syph-style inline Phillips + 2 openers layer, and 91mm scissors (nail-nick on the normal side!), and black-with-red-shield scales from a Pioneer.
I made a few mistakes and I'm not 100% happy with the results - but it works :) and it was a good learning experience.  The action on the phillips and scissors are a bit rough, and the phillips sits a little higher than I'd like.

Been looking at doing a similar alox mod. Personally can't do away with scissors and in-line phillips. Can anyone point me to details on the in-line phillips/openers combination layer? Thanks.

Hey, this looks something similar to what I plan to do for my next project.  Been looking at a 2 layer SAK with similar tool set to the Yeoman minus the multipurpose hook and replacing the corkscrew with the backside phillips  :D

Welcome jaya - Very nice work there. You have good taste too. Did you make the orange scales yourself?

I have a real soft spot for the Explorer chassis and my 2 modded EDC's are a Woodsman and a Passenger but with the small blade replaced by an in-line awl in both cases.

Hi there Magentus. Nope, the g10 orange scales are done by a good friend from Bali
The woodsman was my second mod. Been tinkering with the idea of doing a hybrid of both the Huntsman (popular with my friends) and the Explorer (one of my favourite SAK but too thick for edc, hence the Yeoman). Didn't realize that Victorinox had originally produced but discontinued, until classicrock pointed it out to me.

My latest mod was the Yeoman WS since the woodsman was thick (at 5 layers) and can simplify it based on the Yeoman.

Have a soft-spot for scissors and in-line phillips

Welcome to the forum jaya_man.

For that layer you need the openers layers from two 93mm knives.  Flip one of the springs around to put the bottle and can openers at the same end.  Then the opposite end of the two springs needs to be modified to fit the phillips driver.  Copying the profile of the 91mm phillips spring is a good starting point.  For me it was a process of trial and error with lots of adjustments until the fit and action was OK.  I trashed one spring before I got it right.  I don't know if this is what other people do, but I also partly ground down the lobes on the tang of the phillips to get an easier action.  Pushing against 2 springs is tough.  You also need spacers either side of the phillips.  And of course you need to drill out the pivot hole of the phillips to match the other tools (3mm or 1/8" depending on what you're using for pivots).
It was a pretty time-consuming mod, and expensive too since you need parts from 3 knives.  But it was a satisfying one and worth the effort.
