Legacy style Juice?
on: June 25, 2014, 01:53:31 AM
I'm wondering if I'm alone in this?

How about a legacy style tool built around the Juice pliers head?

I LOVE my Micra. I carry it everyday as a compliment to my EDC knife.

EDC Pair by Pinnah, on Flickr

It's astonishing how much functionality can be packed into a package so small and so light.

When hold a Juice, I think, "too heavy; too fat".

What I want is a big Micra. I want it to be 3.5 oz or less. I want it too be thin. I don't need any more tools than the Micra. Swap the tweezers for Juice style scissors.

Am I alone on this?

I don't know. There seems to be several suggestions for a mini Rebar but that might be a tad thicker than you're after. If you want a larger Micra, I believe it's Bear & Sons makes 2 sets of small shears; one with a bird gutting tool and the other with a weed puller IIRC.

The Bear and Son shears are quite large (Supertool 300 large), so are quite a lot bigger than a "Mini" Rebar.

Have you looked at a PST II ?  IIRC some people have praised the scissors on them, and if you don't like the combo blade you could always swap in a plain blade from a regular PST.

...When hold a Juice, I think, "too heavy; too fat".

My pre-2014 model Juice S2 is my urban EDC.  I see it as an SAK with pliers.  I'm OK with its weight, size and carry comfort and it is non-locking legal out of the box. :tu:

I don't abuse it like I do my Rebar because I don't completely trust the design and possible warranty replacement with the new model but that's another matter.

I'd like see a "mini-Rebar" with a plier jaw no weaker than the Juice if the weight could come down a little, but scissors would be essential.  I also require my EDC to have non-locking knife blades (I have modded my Rebar knife blades to be non-locking).  Locking drivers however would be a real bonus over the Juice.

I live in hope that LM will recognise than the 2014 Juice has bombed and we will maybe get something like a "mini-Rebar" for 2015.

The problem of solutions like a mini Rebar (as I understand and I probably don't), the PST  or kick or fuse is the size and weight.

For what I want the length should be no more than a Juice. Should be noticeably thinner than Juice. As thin as possible. Weight needs to be UNDER 4 oz. Target 3.5 oz.

No need for full sized or locking tools. Micra sized tools, blade and Juice style scissors.

Target users here are;
1) pocket carry companion to full sized EDC knife.
2) light weight travel like backpacking or bike touring.
3) pocket carry alternative to small SAKs.

If it hits 4 oz, it's too big. Think Micra, only a bit bigger.

It sounds like the Juices are defective right out of the box so what may happen is retailers will get sick of them getting returned and just stop carrying LM products. It's bad business to keep pushing this garbage. LM if you're reading this, it's time to cut your losses and put a recall out on the Juice line. I hope you'll do the right thing!

Sawman, are you seeing issues with new Juices? I take that to mean the one/s with the bi-coloar scales?

Yes, the new ones with the bi-colour scales. I'm afraid they could hurt LM's business and wish they'd just recall/stop selling them. I really want to see LM prosperous but they make such bad decisions sometimes. :salute:

It shouldn't be difficult to make a mini-Rebar. Just use the Skeletool pliers.

What tools would people like? To me, the Sideclip is pretty good. That's a definite favourite of mine.

Sticking pretty much to the "Rebar" brief and assuming still 5 layers -

Long bays

plain knife!  (but knowing LM they'd stick in a combo). Non locking for timid countries.
scissors
diamond file
+1 from wood-saw, metal saw, serrated blade, hex or 1/4" driver or any number of radical options.

Short bays

large driver/pry-bar
medium driver
3D phillips
package opener
awl
slimline lanyard attachment/bottle opener

I was thinking like a PPP with 4 layers, or maybe even a Sideclip with 3. Both are nice and thin and slip into your pocket easily.

3 flat drivers, Phillips, blade, scissors. That would be enough for me.

I was commenting on "mini-Rebar" which is slightly OT.  Sorry.

Sort of, only small and lighter.

The SOG is a full 4" closed.  Should get down to the 3 3/4" target like the Juice.

The SOG is over 5 oz.  Should get down to under 4 oz.    This need not be super burly.  We have enough choices of those.  But it should be durable under normal light use like the original PST and the Micra.

Shrink the PST II, use the Juice pliers and ditch the full length blades.
Grow the Micra just a bit, use the Juice pliers, loose the tweezers and add the Juice scissors.

Thinner than a PST and way thinner than a Juice.
Same length close as a Juice.
Lighter than a Juice by a full ounce.
More durable than a Juice and as durable as a Micra or PST.

For me, this would solve the "I want a Juice but they stink too bad" problem.

I would have a tool like this in my pocket for sure! Especially if it still had the juice Phillips head or one that was a little longer, maybe something in between the kick and the juice phillips.

I would even buy a knife less tool like this. I've been carrying a folder lately anyway and that would cut down the tool overlap.

And add a deep carry pocket clip, preferably black. A guy can dream right?

I didn't know they were having trouble like this with the new Juice line.  It just looked like lazy repackaging to me, plus the added factor of being extraordinarily butt-ugly.  Not being a huge fan of big box stores, I however noticed at our Target - there are no LM products to be found.  Not a one.  I haven't inquired, since the only store I physically went to for an LM tool was Cabela's for the OHT.

At any rate, the imaginary tool described in this thread could be one I'd buy as well.  The only tool that I know LM is making this year that I'm interested in currently is the Leap - for kids...as I've got two monkeys [not mine] that might benefit sometime soon.
