Like a lot of you, I don't like being dependent on others or having a situation control me.

No offense, but there's very little DIY spirit in deciding what brand to carry today. Does it give you options? Sure. Are you still dependent on others? Oh yeah.  :-\

I think I know what you're saying, but I certainly feel more prepared, and consequently perhaps just a little less dependent on others or my environment..?

I know what you mean.  :)  It's nice to be able to just get on and do it yourself, rather than having to go and involve someone else.
