Victorinox Gardener
on: August 06, 2014, 07:34:54 PM
Today i saw someones sales ad. It was not far from me, so i decided to go and check. Seller had two Gardeners for sale plus Classic SD. Prize was not bad, so i took them all. Unfortunately no boxes were stored, only light carry if all.

I would like to know more of these Gardener knives. When they were made, how long, and how much they were made. And ofcourse, are these ones real...

I already read SAKWiki on these. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Gardener

First, their blades are not shiny, like other SAKs blades are.
Second, blade is ground only on one side.
Third, only one side of the blade is stamped, it reads "VICTORINOX, SWISS MADE, STAINLESS"

One more thing, liners are brass.

As far as I know, these are still regularly produced (but with the aluminium liners), and the new ones are usually priced about $15-$20. They are a bit different from the usual knives from Victorinox, they are a category of their own. There are not many SAK fans who care about these "different" Vics, so the information about these is quite scarce.

Nice purchase  :tu:

Once in a blue moon, the Gardener's offshoot, the Daypacker, can be found with brass liners, too, though. ;)

Yep, but that's a different model.
And you can't be 100% sure about any Victorinox model history/availability data.

Quite true, but I don't believe the Daypacker was meant to have brass liners; since the only difference between the two is only the blade.

Victorinox has done an extensive range of grafting and pruning knives, typically with red or black nylon handles. Here's a link to some that are currently available.

Gardener or Floral knife is from Victorinox gardening and pruning series of tools for horticulture:
http://www.victorinox.com/ch/category/Category/Tools-for-horticulture/Gardening-and-pruning-knives/1105?page=1&pn_id=a64f0b5d1594bcf3c889755c575cfb32&f=category&v=1/100/1006/1105&m=add&orderkey=productPriority_up

Great tools, of course  ;)

Maybe someone wiser than me can answer this:
Why isn't there a horticulture knife with a saw? To me, that makes absolutely no sense...  ???

Well, who knows, it should be some Swiss stuff about precision, you know
Pehaps saw isn't needed for grafting and other precise work on plants  :o :D ;)

Most of the gardening knives Vic produced can by found in the 2009 Vic catalog, pp. 13-14. It can be accessed at SAKwiki, Vic., catalogues. As ColoSwiss noted most of the knives can be found at the Heidi Shop.
When I made a purchase there several years ago, the knives had brass grafting & budding tools. They still may be available.

Don't believe they were ever formally imported into the US, though a few showed here up on occasion.

At one time Victorinox offered two versions, a standard line with black nylon scales and brass liners, and an economy line with red nylon scales and aluminum liners. The economy line also included at least one left-handed model. Interestingly enough, the Wenger grafting knives (a few of which are still listed in the Heidi ad) didn't have liners at all, simply a more beefy handle.

That's a very nice and unusual mod!
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.
