Air Mobility Command Museum, Dover DE - Lots of Pics!
on:
September 20, 2014, 01:35:58 AM
Last Friday while on vacation with my family, my brothers and I decided to take my nephew and go see the Air Mobility Command museum next to Dover AFB in Delaware. Dover is home to C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III squadrons, massive cargo aircraft. The Museum itself is just outside the base, and has no admission charge.
In the parking lot is a T-33, and it just gets cooler from there.
The museum is housed in a hanger that is itself a national historic site. The hanger was where the USAAF developed rocket armament for its combat aircraft during World War II, and was a top secret site. Inside, displays include a B-17G.
This C-47's combat record included dropping a stick of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne over Normandy on D-Day, and it also saw service over Holland during Operation Market Garden.
An HH-43 Huskie, a rescue and firefighting helicopter used by the USAF for many years.
Also inside was an AIR-2 Genie, an unguided air-to-air rocket. Its nuclear warhead made up for any inaccuracy.
Outside were some amazing aircraft! This C-141 is the only non-stretched model still in existence. For a size comparison, my brother next to the plane is 6'4". and my nephew on his shoulders adds another foot and a half or so.
My nephew in the pilot's seat of the C-141.
Me in the same spot.
A KC-97, the tanker version of the Boeing B-29. One rare bird!
A C-141A.
A C-133 (
) and a UH-1 Huey.
A One-oh-Wonder! F-101B Voodoo, the interceptor version of the F-101.
And its replacement in service, one of the most beautiful fighters ever built. I remember seeing NJ National Guard F-106's when I was a kid, the last pure interceptor built by the US.
Lots more to come!

More airplanes! Had to get the pics up to Photobucket, sorry.
A KC-135 tanker, NJ Air National Guard insignia.
A C-7 Caribou? Who let a Canadian in here?
Fairchild C-123 Provider, neat aircraft. Some of these were converted into gunships for use over Vietnam.
Speaking of Vietnam, this Beech AT-11 was sold to an "airline" called Air America, and ended up doing all sorts of spooky things over SE Asia......
And the monster. My nephew provides scale again.
This is the only C-5 Galaxy on display anywhere. Ever see video of an ICBM being dropped and launched from a C-5? This is that C-5 you see.
I thought this was neat. This VC-9 served as Air Force One for US presidents from Carter through the first Obama term, when an airport couldn't support the 747 usually used. It was also used by Vice Presidents and first ladies in all of those administrations as well.
While we were there, we heard some huge engines revving up, and ran to the fence just in time to see this C-17 making a short take off. He was off the ground in less than a thousand yards, and climbed very steeply. Very cool to see.
And there you have it! I'm sure I've got more pics, but these should do for now. All in all, a very neat place, with some very rare and unusual aircraft on display, and in some cases open for inspection! My nephew loved it, and my brothers and I always enjoy seeing places like this. Passing on that tradition to the next generation.......

Thanks guys! It was a very neat place indeed. I have some more pics which I'll put up tonight. Smitty, thanks for the info. Cool that it served in a combat zone.
