End of day 4 - it's the weekend and my family have colds so I've been in nursing all day. Prepared lunch and tea with my SI and it bit me tonight! Blood everywhere though it's only a small cut.

Hang in there everyone, I hope you're enjoying the challenge as much as I am.

I hope your family gets to feeling better.
I have been enjoying the challenge. But there has been more than a few times it has been trying.

End of day four report:

Gee this is boring stuff.

The Appie done the business again today, what little there was to do!

Used the Phillips to fasten a N-scale Scania into its box. Because the threads on the screws run straight to metal, these can be more difficult than the usual self tappers into plastic...but no problems what so ever.

Knife was used to despatch straps on packing cartons, while reminding some 'urban youth' of Lu-Tze' rule no.3,as well as releasing my new Delemont Evo11 from captivity when I got home :tu:

End of Day 4, and despite me earlier grumble I never went to the boat, and it was too wet outside to work in the garden. I still had to reach for another tool though  :-[ I reached for a Vic D of E which was on my desk to get rid of an annoying sharp piece of fingernail, and an adjacent piece of dead skin that I kept catching on stuff. Not a job I was prepared to attempt with a knife blade

As for what I actually carried, I used the awl for a minor repair on an e-cig cartomiser, and used the torch a couple of times too

I've done well so far, but really wanted to cheat today.  I needed scissors to cut a small zip tie on a wire loom, but since I'm carrying my Pioneer, I was missing my SAK scissors. :(  I really wanted to go and grab my Climber, but I resisted.  It took me FOREVER to find a bloody pair small enough to do the job too.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I've had pretty good luck using the awl on my pioneer to cut zip ties.  I actually prefer that to scissors.
+1.  93mm awl is killer on zip ties.
I'll have to remember to try and use the awl to see how it fares on them.  Thanks for the tips guys!

End of day four, opened a bracket kit for a ceiling fan, slit some electrical tape when I couldn't find my Stanley knife. Attempted to pry a jammed tire loose on my toddler's toy ambulance, but was unsuccessful. That might take a little more finesse than a Classic can muster.

Oh my GOD WHAT THE smurf WAS I THINKING?!?! Gahhhhh!!!
I Want my SURGE!!!

I think we are beginning to separate into two groups.  The first consists of guys like Nate who actually use their larger SAKs and MTs on a daily basis or on the job.  This minimalist thing is going to be hard on them, because it entails not having the proper tool on hand or having to keep walking to the tool box.

The other group, which I fall into, use a SAK merely as a daily convenience item - opening a package, snipping a thread or tightening a screw once in a while.  This minimalist thing is not so difficult for us, as even a Classic SD will handle these things just fine.  For this second group, the only "burden" of going minimalist is that we just have to give up the fun of carrying something larger or switching between SAKs.  That's not an inconsequential burden for a true SAK addict, but its not nearly as difficult as giving up a Surge that you rely on all day.

So we guys in the second group definitely have an advantage when it comes to remaining faithful for the whole 30 days.  Its only been 4 days, but I'm having no difficulty whatsoever with carrying only the Executive.  And I partly wish that I had gone even smaller (Classic SD).

The thing that's been interesting for me is to note how my work enviroment has changed, and the impact that's had on my carry.

One of the prime reasons I replaced my PST was the number of shelves I was having to repair,or bend back into usable shape, and the PST's handles where cutting my hands badly. The Wave gave me a massive increase in tasks I could tackle, rather than having to refer them to either our house services,or go scrounge a speSmurfpillst tool.

Another key factor has been a practical improvement in terms of how the shop floor is run. There is now a full screwdriver set, which our girls have claimed possessive ownership of;likewise scissors. My fixation with redundancy of tools is the nessesity it once was!

When I done the Fit test a year ago,I realised I could probably get away with a Rambler and LM Mini, and maybe keep a full sized Multi in my locker for those times where the smurf does hit the fan.

....

I've been very pleased with the one layer SAKs so far,but three or four years ago,I'd never have coped!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Thanks Gust and Nate - they're both on the mend now thanks to my great nursing abilities (!) Plus I did literally bleed for them.

Food prep again mainly today - opened a can of chickpeas to make hummous and lots of veg prep.

I really like the SI but I'm still missing my usual.

I had a bit of an unusual situation today where I used a tool on my minimalist carry that my regular EDC doesn't have.

I used the tweezers on the Wengerinox to remove a splinter from my daughter's heel.  Normally, if I had a splinter, I would just dig it out with the blade.  On her, I would have had to go get some regular tweezers.

So, my minimalist carry was more efficient and saved me a trip

A very fair assessment I'd say.  Now normally I'd fall into the first group as I work as a Maintenance Engineer and a MT has been a vital part of my tool kit for years now, I just couldn't imagine turning up to work without one.

However, I'm on a break from work just now (on purpose  ;)) so a MT has become a bit of a luxury for a while.  In this spirit my Golfer has managed all my needs for the last few days and I'd say it'll likely handle most of them for the rest of the month.  Time will tell though. :D

Kinda light day today. Used the combo tool to open a can of chili, used to hook to thread some twine through a trap. Blade did some cutting.
But the main thing today that was totally not related to my SAK use, was I got shoot a freaken 50 Pounder mountain howitzer!!!! BOO YAH!!!!

 Sorry guys, I'm out  :salute:

Tried it, but it's really not doing me any favours. It's proving to be a handicap in my normal daily life, so I'm reverting back to "normality" as of tomorrow. This exercise has confirmed to me that me carrying the stuff I normally do is justified, and it wouldn't be sensible for me to carry this on. I considerd just carrying extra at certain times, but the reality is I don't always know in advance when the extras will be needed, and makes much more sense to bow out now before I find myself too compromised

Good luck to everyone else
