New Timex watch choice
on: October 08, 2014, 10:43:52 AM
Hey guys, I would like some advice on which watch to buy at the end of this month.

The choices I have are the following:
IRONMAN - T5E231, this one is slighlty more expensive by around $12.
IRONMAN - T5K417

So far I have a Casio AE-1000W(gym watch), Casio G Shock GA-100A(EDC) and a Seiko SSB065 for special occasions so basically I want to add another EDC watch to the mix.

I've had a bad experience with Timex, so I would recomend any other brand...

Same here, with three different watches.

I'll be sticking with Casio.

How so? Was it with warranty service or were the watches just bad on the whole?

derekmac, on another forum, can't remember which one I heard that Timex outsells Casio in the Canada area but you would know better.

Now I am so confused because I was really looking forward to a Timex to change things up a bit from my Casios. I have had bad experiences with Fossil watches so they are off my list.

Between the straps falling apart, the glass scratching just looking at it, not keeping good time, and the warranty department trying to charge for work that wasn't authorized by me, I wouldn't buy another one.  Old Timex watches were good watches, but I wouldn't touch what they are offering now.  I have an old wind up Timex that's older than I am, and it still works like a champ!!

I'd say for sales they are probably pretty even.  With everyone I know that wears a watch, they are probably pretty close to 50/50 between Timex and Casio.

Thanks, I am really quite surprised that Timex after sales service is so bad

I think the Casio Tough Solar STL-S100H is within the same price range as the Timex so will probably go for that one but I have till month end to make the choice so hopefully will gather more feedback in the meantime.

... and the light not working and the replacement strap being of a different tone from the original Ironman Triathlon and the writing on the buttons fadind away real fast...

I got a new leather strap I made myself just to use it until the battery dies. After that I'll just let it sit in the bottom of a drawer...

I've only had limited experience with timex, no complaint about quality, the expedition I bought in high school still works after 15 years, but CS is staffed by idiots. I bought an alti/baro/compass watch that came with leather strap, wanted silicone. They happened to change the name of watch from e-instrument to intelligence, and the the woman on phone wouldn't sell me the strap because she insists they are different models. An otherwise 2 minute phone call took me nearly 15 minutes.

I'll say one thing though, they don't charge much for the straps, $12 as oppose to $60 for a citizen rubber.

I have a T5k196 shock watch that I wore for 1 year almost exclusively, and now its my dirty activity watch.  It still works fine, but one of the fake hex bolts broke off at the 12 month mark.  I think it has a much nicer display and module interface than a g-shock (probably the same module as in the watches you are looking at). The digits are big enough to see, unlike a lot of g-shocks.

It certainly does not have the same build quality of even a basic g-shock 5600, though.  But is is also a little cheaper in price.

I think it all comes down to what you want.  I think at the end of the day, any plastic watch is inherently disposable, if for no other reason than resin-rot down the road.  I would let features and price be your main guide, IMO.

You can see my review here.

I had a Ironman a few years back and it was a good watch to begin with but it started to get water inside the case after about 6 month's.  Not alot, just enough to fog up the display.  I'd pop the back off let it dry wear it again and repeat the process and it kept working for a few months .

So far not really much good things said about the Ironman series. I am really quite disappointed because I was under the impression it was a really good watch from the Youtube reviews I've seen but I guess in the long term it just doesn't quite cut it. My heart was really set on one though.

JAfromMn, do you happen to live in fairly humid climate?

Thanks for the link gustophersmob. It was exceptionally helpful to know what your long term results were. :tu:

I second Gustophersmob`s thoughts.

The Timex watches I have/had were ok, although I have non long-time experience because my EDC is a Casio G-Shock.
I have read that teh straps tend to break after a while of wearing on Timex watches, but so they do on casios, too. It´s because your sweat, Ozone and UV rays will deteriorate the material over time.

Choose what suits you, they should work fine. And if you´d rather have a Timex Shock, like the one reviewed, i have a slightly used one that I just don´t wear, because of my G-Shock.

I wore nothing but Timex for a good amount of time and never had an issue with them. I had a Citizen, Seiko 5 and have moved to wearing a Casio F-91W now..

 I'm from frozen Minnesota.

I used to be a janitor/maintenance man at a hotel and I washed my hands often. A dozen times a day or more.

I see so that explains the moisture build up inside of your watch. Thank you for clarifying that for me. I am from a fairly dry climate so that definitley helps. :tu:

Ive never had a fogged up screen on a G-shock, if there WR moisture shouldn't get in,i had this happen on a seiko diver once after i serviced it,it was my fault as moisture got inside via my sweaty finger, once i dried the in side of the watch i had no more fogging up. :tu:

With the negativity surrounding Timex, I have now fully decided to buy a new G Shock. The Mudman and  Rangeman have caught my eye but the GD-X6900 range in camo has the   :gimme: factor. The only con is I have to wait another month before getting one because of the extra price especially on the Rangeman. Opinions??

Now you see my problem , to either go aesthetics on camo or functionality/Solar power with the Mudman.

Functionality is for the lifetime of the watch, standard for aesthetics changes.
