Kyrgyzstan
on: August 21, 2008, 01:47:43 AM
Now that I have a Photobucket account going, I figured I'd share a few of my favorite pics my wife & I took in Kyrgyzstan a couple years back. I'll post some more if there's any interest. :)

Here's the flag.

Which was on top of this mountain. This place is called Mount Solomon because Solomon supposedly slept in a cave here once. It's kinda interesting, though you can't tell from the pic, it just stick straight up in the middle of their second largest city, Osh. I took this pic from a downtown city street.

If you looked closely you could see the flag and a building on the top of the mountain. The building is a mosque...

Here's on of a WWII memorial in their capital, Bishkek. It's supposed to symbolize a Yurt, their tradional tent/houses, and there's a woman inside waiting for her husband to come home, with a fire thats always burning. They lost a lot of men during WWII for the Soviet army.

On a lighter note, heres a pic of my host brother (at least a bit of him) burning a sparkler on New Years Eve. :)

How big is the flag in the first picture?  I'm trying to get a sense of scale for the mountain and mosque in the second pic.

My wife and I led a team of volunteers for ~6 months teaching English. I'll have you Brits know that your outdated textbooks are still running loose in the former USSR, and wreaking havoc on the poor students' grammar and vocab. >:( :D

I don't want to sound ignorant or insular, but....Kyrgystan is a real place?
Not sure if you're joking or not, as I didn't know much if anything about it before I was asked to go, but yeah, it's a real place. :) It's a country in Central Asia, and was part of the former USSR.

Well, I'm not quite sure, but here are some pics that might help a little. First is just a close up of the top of the mountain. You can just barely see people standing on a landing on the far right. It's a little decieving though, cause they're closer than the mosque and flag. You can also see a bit of the path leading up to it.

Here's a pic from that landing looking back. You can see a doorway in the Mosque and a bit of the flag to give some scale.

A couple more from Mount Solomon...

Here's a pic of walking up the path towards the mosque. This follows along the side of the mountain, from left to right in the former pics.

Here's a "museum" cut into the side of the mountain. It was closed when we were there, so I'm not really sure what is in there, but the sign says "muzea", meaning museum, if you sound out the cyrillic lettering.

And here's a look "backwards" from walking up on that path.

This ought to warm you up... :D This was on the road from Jalalabad to Osh, where Mount Solomon is.

It was actually warm for this one... This was on the road from Jalalabad to Bishkek (the capital).

The craziest thing is that views like these are really very common over there once you get outside of the cities. Here's a sunrise just outside Jalalabad...

Here's a normal street in Jalalabad.

Here's a guy on a bicycle, though I supose you could figure that out yourself. :P My wife took this one...

Some men playing games. Notice all the different kinds of hats... Tall on in the middle is Kyrgyz, squarish one on the right is Uzbek, which is kinda blocking the Russian one. :P
