Anybody Carry an Electricians Knife?
on: October 30, 2014, 07:08:43 PM

I am intrigued by the two or three blade electrician knifes that have a spearpoint blade (sometimes a hawkbill one too) and a lockable wire stripping screwdriver. I know that Klein and Camilius used to make them and there are a couple other companies out there that make them. Does anybody around here carry one?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

All the time.   The Camillus TL-29 is one of my favorites, I own several.  I also did a giveaway for one here a while back.  It's a very well-made, solid knife. :tu:

Does the blade itself lock? Also, how is the steel compared to Leatherman or SAK?

No the blade is a slipjoint, though it's pretty solid.  Not a nailbreaker, but it's not going to fold up on you easily.  The screwdriver has a liner lock.

As for the blade steel, the ones I have are all stainless, not sure exactly what steel Camillus used.  It does take and keep a great edge though, I can get my TL's shaving sharp.  :tu:

Rough Rider also makes a similar tool. They call it the Coal Miner, and its quite cheap. Great value for money.

When I was in the army, they handed them out at the supply room like lollypops. We were an engineer unit, so it was stocked with the regular tools and considered an expendable piece of gear. Theones we had in the late 60's were a carbon steel from Camillus, and it was plain old 1095. Good stuff!!!

They were a rugged good cutting knife, and the locking screw driver gave it extra utility. We liked them a heck of lot better than the all stainless MIL-K knives that people call the 'demo' knife.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I have a couple in tool boxes.  Nice to have for those dirty jobs when I don't want booger up the knife in my pocket with caulk or whatever.  However, I don't really carry them, as I find them bulkier but with fewer features than SAKs.

Forgot to add that Klein still makes them.

I've seen both of your knives before. Lovely tools. The screwdriver looks great. Didn't knew the Camillus hada a liner lock in it. Even better!

Don't forget the Opinel #9 Couteau de Bricolage

I have one but it is too big to EDC, though it locks and feels like a Leclerc tank.

I have one that I got from JD, and it gets used quite frequently at home - but not for the designed purpose. I call it my snuff knife, and it's what I use for filling my snuff boxes.

The tapered (sharp to blunt) electricians blade and driver tip is great for coaxing open stubborn Wilsons of Sharrow tins, and the recess in the spine of the driver for accessing the blade's nail nick is perfect for opening Samuel Gawith tins (I've not found anything else that comes close). I then use the blade to dispense the fresh snuff into my snuffboxes for carry/use.

Cool!
So are the handles made of wood or are they some sort of plastic?

What do you do with snuff? Do you sniff it?

Cheers Nate :tu: Yeah, take a pinch and inhale it lightly. It can be a bit sneezy when you're not used to it, but that soon passes
