Rub pencil graphite in it. File little on paper, and start rubbing it in. If it catches too much on handles, you just sand it little.

Nicely carved.

Very nice. You might use a pyrograph if you have one.
What did you use to carve it with?

These are the tools im using (foto) they are an old wood and lino cutting set that i sharpend to superrrr sharp. And to make the lines a litle darker i used charcoal but that fades pretty fast.
i used an old solderingiron before but im not verry good with it.. so what can jou do with a pyrograph?

 if you use solvent, and charcoal or graphite to make paste of a kind, would it be sucked into the woods grain? Just a thought.

The pyrograph burns the wood permanently. See my Opi here. I used it directly on the wood, so the result is dotted and not that nice but you can touch it inside your carved lines and have a good outcome.
I have two sets of such tools, maybe I'll sharpen them and use your technique on a new Opinel for a more pleasing picture. I would like to carve a mermaid.

Very nice.
Crow, sorry, I missed your request. But my daughter who is studying industrial design, confiscated the pyrograph and took it with her where she lives, in the island of Syros (near the well known Myconos). I'll buy another one for me, when Lidl Stores have it again.

"pyrograph" is such a cooler name than "wood burner"
And I suppose the use of would be "pyrography" not "wood burning"
So much better than our name for that tool...I'm jealous I'll never get to use it since no one else will know what I am talking about.

Good work.

Pyrograph (πυρογράφος) is a Greek word, pyr (πύρ)= fire + graphο (γράφω)= write, so it is a firewriter.

Yep I remember a little of my 6th grade Latin class.
In the states the tool name is "wood burner" or "wood burning iron"
I wasn't trying to translate; we just have a stupid sounding name here. :P

Americans are known as practical people. Since it burns wood it is a wood burner. If you want to sound more sophisticated, you may call it xylocaust, that's wood burner in Greek (ancient and modern).
