In line phillips Vic's compared to Leatherman
on: November 29, 2014, 07:03:28 PM
How does the Victorinox 91mm  in line Phillips (Explorer, for example)
compare to the in line Phillips on a Leatherman Crater C33TX  ?
Is one sturdier in terms of torque ?
does the length difference matter much ?
the material?
polish ?
What are your impressions?

They are almost identical in length.
Towards the tip the Vic driver is thinner so you might find it can fit in tighter holes than the C33T driver.
Towards the base the LM driver is narrower (it's the same all the way down but the Vic flares at the base) so down a deeply recessed hole the LM might be better.
IME they fit in a similar variety of screws.

Comparing my Spirit to all of my Leathermans the Leatherman steel holds up better. My C33T and Rebar have both had far more use than my Spirit's Phillips but the Spirit has a lot more dings in it.

The Vic has a 90° stop which the LM doesn't.

In terms of torque, it's hard to say and I think it depends on where it's going to fail. It's quite hard to explain. Looking at the Leatherman from on top with the pivot running left-right, the bit that the pivot passes through is narrower than the one on the Victorinox. Looking at it from the side with the pivot coming up towards you, the flat around the pivot is bigger so will spread the torque out more. It's also pressing against a steel liner instead of an aluminium one.

Please accept a vaguely rubbish picture:

True .
Is that a better, sturdier tool ?
I think it was once reported that the newer shorter Phillips was made of stronger material.
and there's also the CyberTool 29 with a Phillips bit layer which is even longer .
How does that compare?

I have owned Explorers in the past that have the inline Phillips Screwdriver.  I believe I sold or gave the on pictured to a kid in the Boy Scouts.

I may be sacreligious, but when I need a Phillips Screwdriver, I get a dedicated Phillips Screwdriver OR I use the Phillips screwdriver from my old Leatherman PST.  I am really old school in my beliefs, and my Phillip screwdrivers are really old too.  I have not bought a Phillips screwdriver in 15 years.

When I have a tough job, I break out my electric drill, drop in a Phillips bit and away I go.
