back side of the knife
on: July 13, 2008, 06:09:33 PM
on my SAK, the backside impliments are extremely hard to open. the awl can only be opened with some kind of metal flat thing to get in the normal fingernail groove. has anyone else had this problem?

They are quite a lot stiffer, but not nail breakers in my experience :)

Is this a new SAK?  Or could it be in need of a clean?

probably in need of a clean, but i don't think it would help that much, i've had it for about 2 or 3 years now. it doesnt sound gritty or anything when i open them, just incredibly hard to open, makes them  unusable in an every dya situation

Yep, what he said.  :)

You'll be amazed how much of a difference a good clean and an oil can make.

I've noticed that to...some SAKs have a pretty easy opening awl..and some are near impossible with a fingernail.

The only good thing I can say about an awl that you can't get open easily is that if you're using it hard it will take a bit more pressure to have it close on you.

I'd say oil it...at work I use some Marvel air tool oil on my tools and it works well without oozing everywhere.

I've had tools with implements that are hard to open. 3 in 1 Oil worked great but I also used a toothpick, not the one in the SAK, to clean the springs after I worked them for a while. Then I applied oil again. I've also used WD40 and it worked well.

Why are you even using a backspring reamer?

love the  :climber: as much as anyone with $49.95 to spend, but it's not an excuse not to have a Pioneer model.

(I have a lot of trouble the the reamer & hook on my climber too)
