Forgive My Ignorance A Fuse Question
on: June 15, 2008, 08:09:14 PM
I recently purchased a Fuse and am well impressed but what I would like to know is what kind of steel is used for the knife blade as it has seen regular heavy use and is still shaving sharp I know that it will be a real SOB to sharpen but it's great in the meantime

Leatherman web page says:

Quote
Leatherman tools are made of 400-series stainless steel. Carbon content and heat-treated hardness vary depending on the specific implement.

It shouldn't be too hard to sharpen despite the edge holding ability since 400-series steel is not overly renowned for wear resistance.

Yeah, it's so easy to use a SharpMaker. I still can't sharpen serrated edges well though.  :(

I have given it a lot of thought but I keep trying freehand as I am a stubborn S.O.B and will get there in the end

I have the fuse also, great MT,like the longer screwdrivers, locking blades, and long main blade,I know they say 400 series, but that could be a lot of different kinds,I also have several Bucks with 420HC,and I would bet that its pretty close to that quality.

Enjoy your Fuse Jock1,it's a great EDC.

I have a Fuse myself. I upgraded to my Wave about 2 months ago, but the Fuse is still a great tool. The knife metal is 420HC, same as a buck knife. Mine remained sharp for a long time, but sharpening was a breeze. It just took about 5 light strokes on an arkansas oil stone, and it was right back to shaving. I have read alot about people complaining about these blades not holding a razors edge. I got rid of the factory edge and put my own on it, and it solved that problem, but in part too, this knife is made for hard work, and probably isnt meant to be razor sharp, just sharp enough to do what it needs to do, but I still like my knives razor sharp.
