There are mouse gestures and similar for non touch screens... I watched part of the tutorials once... but I think they spent so many years getting us to "start it up" that old habits are hard to break.
Ubuntu has gone to a similar type of tile/menu, and the first thing I did was find an alternative desktop (gnome classic or mate) to get my old menus back. I feel like I find what I want quicker in a menu than I do with the tile setup where I feel like I spend more time looking than doing. Everything seems geared towards using the search in the menu, which is fine, but you also need to know what you're looking for is called, which isn't always obviously named, I prefer the sorted folders in a menu to at least narrow it down quickly.
To me the whole tile idea feels less productive, and far less multitask orientated. Win8 works fine on our laptop, and while I don't always use the touchscreen, I do find that sometimes it's aggravating not to. I typically have about half a dozen things open on my desktop... and while there's nothing preventing you from doing the same in win8, it feels more like it's a system geared towards the one app single task at a time world...
