So Spyderco...
on: December 29, 2014, 07:58:39 AM
I'm on the prowl for my first Spyderco. There seems to be a metric smurf ton of buzz around here about Spyderco and I want to see what it's all about. What's a good first Spyderco with a decent sized blade and without breaking the bank (say, $60-$80)?

I'd recommend a Delica, or if you want a bit larger blade, an Endura. The Delica is what got me started on Spyderco knives.

What knives do you already have that you like? Define the 'decent sized blade'. Tip up or down carry?

I'm almost an exclusive owner of MT's with the exception of an SOG Seal Pup. My EDC blade is the LM MUT. And by decent I'd say minimum of 2.5 but more like 3 inches. And does the tip up/down matter? And it's funny you mention the Delica and Endura I had my eyes on those.

Yeah what the Lobster guy said we need details.

About how much blade you want and do you expect to take care of it or looking for low maintenance?

Based on what you have already said though I agree the Delica/Endura line are nice but would like to put the most excellent Native FRN out there. Such a good knife.

Pictures when I get off tonite.

Oh if you like the Japan knives, the Stretch is also very good and a exceptional slicer.

I would also suggest the Delica 4 FFG as a first Spyderco. It is a excellent knife in every sense.

As far as the tip up or tip down conversation. For me personally I will only carry a knife tip up. It is personal preference, but a strong preference for me. For others it may not matter at all. I would say the most important thing about clip position for those who have no preference of tip up or tip down is picking a knife that accommodates the blade to rest against the seam of your pocket making it impossible for it to open and cut you when reaching in your pocket. The good thing about Spyderco is the vast majority of their knives give you 4 way pocket clip position option so you can choose any way you want it configured.

Spyderco has many more or less specialized knives but I think that the Ladybug/Delica/Endura have all the Spyderco qualities with general purpose blades (the plain edge is more general purpose than the serrated). A Ladybug for the keychain and a Delica for the pocket (or Endura if you like it bigger). Very versatile. I have the two extremes and I resisted to the Delica since I use an Opinel at around the same size and didn't want to change. But if you are going to buy just one the Delica is a good size. My Endura terrifies people.

Been carrying tip blade away from the pocket edge down my whole life with no issues, maybe because I do not keep my pivots to loose?

As far as which I like best for carry configuration prolly tip down just because of muscle memory. That said my Native is tip up and for a smaller knife like this it make a lot of sense.

Here is the pic I was talking about this morning. Native FRN Tan.

I have cut myself multiple times carrying that way. I just hate thinking I could possibly cut myself every single time I stick my hand in my pocket.

No Spyderco's. A Leatherman Wave, a CRKT, and another knife I can't remember right now.

I still dont have a spyderco yet in my collection.  Tried an endura and didnt like it at all and sold it.  Then there just seemed to be too many versions and I didnt know what to try next so I didnt bother with another one.  I was actually thinking about something like a para military 2, but other things always came up so I never pulled the trigger.

PM2 is out of the price range the OP was talking about but it is a great knife. Currently in a hard fought battle with my Millie for my favorite Spydie. Just posted it up here in an attempt to enable Syph since he is gonna cost me so much with his customs.

Damn....

I know right?

Love that picture. Was taken by the guy I bought mine from and has some kinda processing done.

This is a more what it looks like for real pic.

Not doing the challenge show off!

Soon enough I will have one of my Spydies back in its RFP home. Well until I get me a pocket clip for my wave then there will be some kinda of shared custody thing going on.

Buy from a confirmed Spyderco dealer though. Their are a insane amount of faked PM2's. It is easily the most faked Spyderco. I have been doing a lot of research and can spot a fake very easily and have been thinking of putting together a little set of pictures for anyone who is worried about buying or owning a fake PM2. I do not want to put it in a thread though as it makes it easier for the counterfeiters to know how to make better fakes.

The challenge is to get them for us over here. There are couple of dealers here, but their prices are ridicilus.
Online, its hard to know wich are reputable or not. And shipping and customs fees are usually very expencive from the the big companies like Knifecenter.
I think I have found good aseller on ebay though. Hes very good at ticking of the right boxes on the customs forms, giving me a minimum of hassle. But it would be nice to be able to see if the product is real, or a fake.

There is no reason to buy them off Ebay nowadays!  There are alot of online shope like Howe's, Knifecenter, Grand Prairie, etc that are all pretty close in prices.

I was noticing I TON of cheap spydies on google shopping. Some as cheap as $20 and that just doesn't sit right with me. Someone point me in the direction of good info on spotting fakes. And you guys have kind of instilled a fever in me. I did spend $120 on my MUT and near as much on a few others. So I can justify spending a little more on my first Spyderco. Say $110ish. And what's up with all these crazy metal types? What the hell is VG-10? I keep my knives well oiled and taken care of but is this on par with adopting a baby? What kind of care is involved?
