I was noticing I TON of cheap spydies on google shopping. Some as cheap as $20 and that just doesn't sit right with me. Someone point me in the direction of good info on spotting fakes. And you guys have kind of instilled a fever in me. I did spend $120 on my MUT and near as much on a few others. So I can justify spending a little more on my first Spyderco. Say $110ish. And what's up with all these crazy metal types? What the hell is VG-10? I keep my knives well oiled and taken care of but is this on par with adopting a baby? What kind of care is involved?

For this amount of coin I would get on the Spyderco forum and get something from the for sale section.

The info on spotting fakes is out their. I just did a write up on spotting fake PM2's, but it is not visible to you as it is only for "no life club" members. I can point you in the direction of a great website to order from that I know every single knife including all Spydercos are legit if you want.

VG-10 is great steel. No special "out of the ordinary" care is needed.

I got the knife bug earlier this year. When I first saw Spyderco Knives, I was severely turned off as I didn't find them aesthetically pleasing.

A friend of mine lent me his Delica to use for the day a couple of months back when out in the woods.

They just plain work. Handle comfort, the thumb hole, blade geometry, etc. Once I realized this, Spyderco's immediately went from ugly (my previous thoughts) to absolutely gorgeous. The same features I didn't find "pretty" to look at it are the ones that make them an absolute pleasure to use.

Christmas gift from the wife.

I've picked up 4 Spyderco folders this year. Absolutely love them.

I considered them beauties from the moment I saw them, love at first sight. I don't like the tactical look, I prefer a sissy knife that bites.

Thats exactly how I feel about them now.  The blade shape to me is just ugly and blade-handle angle bug my OCD something fierce.  They just dont look 'right' to me.  I dont like the how forward the blade sits when open.  When I look at them it look like the blade needs to open another 20 degrees or so.  I prefer the tip, pivot and end end of handle to more or less be in line.  All the knives I am used to are of that geometry and when I picked up a spyderco it felt like a mini kukri to me.  Now I cant find anyone else who feels the same way about them, so I'll admit im the oddball on that, but I still cant get over it.

I keep rethinking them though as I still want to find one to like to put in my magic box of knives.  :D

Heck Robert send me your address I will send you one to borrow.

Once you get it in hand all the OCD stuff will go away and be replaced with the overriding desire to carry one all the time.

Syph, I was in the same path as you for the longest time, until I got a benchmade bone collector and I started to developed some feelings for the 'spydie hole'.  Right now I have the Spyderco Tenacious, and still warming up to their funky blade/handle shapes.

Outside of SAKs and multitools I have more Spyderco knives than any other brand.

I agree, the look is very distinctive and folks usually love or hate the hump with not much middle ground, but it is very hard to argue with them because they do just work.

I have recently added a Pacific Salt to my Spyderco lineup and it went straight into my work gear, which as most of you know has killed a lot of knives and tools over the years.  I plan to report on it in the spring.

Oh I know I will try another model, I just havent decided what exactly.  Probably something small as I have plenty of larger folders and fixed blades.

When I was getting into knives a few years ago there was quite the custom scene for high end aftermarket scales.  Guys were selling successfully textured Ti scales for the popular high end spydercos.  I was talking with one guy doing it and he said that he even talked with spyderco at a show and they were happy he was doing it!  So pretty cool attitude I think and its always been in the back of my mind to do something similar if I got into collecting Spydercos.

Yeah, cap'n. That'd be greatly appreciated. I'd hate for my first Spyderco to be a crap knockoff. And with all the input from this awesome forum I'm leaning towards the delica. A few members suggested knifecenter. The prices are incredible but are all the knives 100% legit? How's the Tenacious? That thing looks mean!

Edit: It's a complete toss up between the Endura and Delica. What do you guys think?

I think you should try to handle both before you commit to buying. Likely one of them will feel better in the hand, and irrespective of colour, blade shape, steel specs and everything else, that's the one you need to get  :tu:

Another vote for Spyderco here, and another person who thought they were really odd looking until I tried one... now I have three and keep looking at more. The Delica & Endura are great workhorse knives, nothing fancy - they just work. This might not matter to you, but I really like how they're 100% ambidextrous designs, and the pocket clip can be attached to tip up or down, left or right side. Between the 2, the only real difference is size/length. If you've already got an idea what size knife you like to carry, then the decision is easy. I find the Delica to be big enough to be useful, small & light enough to be very easily pocketable and great for EDC. The 3.75" blade on the Endura is much more likely to raise eyebrows, if that's a concern.

Don't worry about fancy steel types, generally the idea is that there's less care involved - high corrosion resistance, and excellent edge retention. Drawbacks are that they could be harder to sharpen, and sometimes will chip rather than just dull under extreme abuse because they're harder/more brittle, but I don't think that's the case with VG-10.

Check out this website.

http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/

Their is a promo code for free shipping and they do not charge tax (in most states) so whatever the price you see is what the total shipped to you will be. PM me for the promo code if you are going to order from them.

Knifecenter should be good to order from as well, but I have personally asked the (boss/owner?) over at Cutleryshoppe about their Spydercos and actually had a Spyderco rep contact me to confirm they buy directly from them.

Between the Delica and Endura is tough. Its personal preference on size really as both are very, very similar. I would say go with the Delica first though. It size seems to be preferred for most people. The Tenacious is nice, but might as well spend a little more and get a better knife with the Delica or Endura.

I've purchased a few from Newgraham and have found their prices to be some of the best around.

Have you looked at the Ambitious, Persistence etc line? Chinese but good Chinese (yes that really exists).  Good way to get your feet wet.

I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised about the toughness and unrustability ( made up word ) of the Salt.

I third green, my favorite color.

All my current Spydies are black and mostly G10. I'm planning to buy myself an Endura and Delica in green FRN for a change of flavor. :tu:

Pacific Salt H-1. You will not see it rust of that I have no doubt.

As far as cutting performance I am not a fan unless you get the SE version. While it cuts fine just make sure to bring a field stone because it dulls fast hence the reason I like it in SE more.

I actually intended to purchase the PE version. How could you quantify its amount of blade fade compared to the VG-10 on the Endura?

VG-10 is noticeably better at edge retention then H-1, like a whole different class. I would never suggest anyone buy a PE H-1 knife. As a SE blade though H-1 holds its edge long enough for a day or two of work say cleaning fish which is what I use mine for.

If you need something that WILL NOT rust ever then a SE H-1 knife is a gem of a tool.
