Style ES
on: January 08, 2015, 08:48:57 AM
The Ps4 is a great little tool.  One of the main reasons it works so well is that its loadout is utterly generic.  You've either got single-purpose but constantly used things like a phillips driver or tools that are useful for basically everything like pliers.  If only the Juice series could be as reliably good as their little sister.

The old E4 was a good idea too; similar form factor but specifically for electronics.  The whole head phillips was great, since those tiny screws in electronics are more likely than average to strip out.  The little slot bit is great for screw terminals, and the tweezers are always useful with teensy parts, tiny jumper wires and clipped leads.

The Es4 on the other hand is a Ps4 wearing the E4's hat, and it's not quite right.  Those very specific wire strippers in an otherwise general purpose tool...I have a better idea:  Take a Style PS, and swap the pliers.  Then you've got the Ps4 for basically everything, and a Style ES specifically for electrical projects.  They'd make a badass pair.  Only reason I don't just do it is the Squirt is riveted together and I'm scared to mess with it.  Anyone wanna play keychain surgeon with me?

I have to agree about the E4.  I have the Radio Shack version and have always liked it.  It is currently EDC in the bottom of my backpack's "good stuff" section, along with a SAK Minathor, which has watchmaker's tools.  The little set of Bergeon small drivers is the best pocket set around.  I use them a lot (I play with watches, too...).

@Breezy, I've been mulling that over since you asked in PM, and I'm leaning toward scissors.  They come with the stock tool, for one.  For two, I can't think of anything that size from Leatherman that I would rather have.

@Kampfer, awesome 'shop jobs!  Quick question though, since you parsed the ES acronym:

Most of the model designations of the Juice/Squirt series make sense.  S2:  2 exterior tool bays, scissors.  C2:  2 tool bays, corkscrew.  Kf4:  Knife(serrated), file, four external bays.  Ps4:  Pliers, scissors, four bays.  What about the Style CS?  What does that C stand for?  Ain't a corkscrew on this thing.  Shouldn't it be the KS or something?  Does it stand for Cnife/Scissors?

While we're on the subject, has anyone actually built that Micra mod to turn it into a PST Jr.?  Or have we determined that won't work somehow?

The conclusion was the pliers are thicker than scissors, wont fit in Micra.
I think the Micra chassis while doesn't allow outside accessibility, it offers more utility, comparing to the Squirt chassis.
Longer tools, more tools, steady construction etc
outside accessibility isn't a big deal IMO on a keychain size tool.

I disagree when it comes to knives. The edge on a Micra knife is harder to use than a Squirt or Style because the opposite scale is in the way. But yes, fewer parts, lighter weight, etc.

For someone who only carry a Micra or a Squirt, I don't think he minds about the knife one way or another.

Tell the truth, I'm not big into modifying multis either. For a tool I count on, that warranty is important to me. This should be a fun little project.

this weekend turned out to be busier than I originally planned, but I did manage to find some time today to swap the ES4 wire strippers into the Style PS...

I present to you -- the Style ES! :salute:

and here's the ES next to an unmodded PS, just for comparison:

a couple notes:
  • I didn't have time to put the Squirt back together, so that will have to wait for another day.
  • it's been awhile since I worked with the Squirt/Style tools... I forgot what a PITA the plier heads can be to swap in. took me awhile to remember how I did it last time.
  • I apparently need to order a new LM mouse pad to take pics on... this one is starting to show its age. :D

Leatherman corporate is paying attention. This is a version of this tool that would sell.

I like it too.  :tu:  Never did get an ES4, thought about it a few times but the largest stripper seemed too small for some things.
