I play every Friday with my father-in-law (he has a table in the basement).

we play for fun, and do not play standard pool games.

I made up a game that we play, and we both enjoy it.

it is a mix of 8 ball and 9 ball.

Rack it up like this

        1
      9  2
    3  8  10
  11 7 15  4
5  13 6 14 12

and it is played like 8 ball in that one person gets strips, and the other gets the solids,

but once that is established, it is like 9 ball.

so , If I can claim solids for example, I have to shoot at the lowest solid, then the next, etc,  however, I can make the 8-ball off of a bank at any time.

same goes for the other player, except they have to do the stripes,  9, 10, etc,  and 8-ball wins, even if made off of the 9 ball.
If I can help, let me know

Interesting, so who ever sinks all solids or stripes in order first then they have to sink the 8? JR

8-ball wins,  you HAVE to hit your balls in order,  but you can hit the 1 into the 8 and win that way too.

so,  in order then 8 or combo the 8 at any time as long as you hit the lowest ball of yours first

Gotcha, that seams like a interesting game I'm going to have to copy this and show my buddy this, cause he was a eight ball player till I started shooting with him, now he's hooked on nine ball, but we have to keep re-racking them every five min. Now what's with the rack setup? JR

the rack set-up is just so both stripes and solids have a fair mix of low balls near the front of the rack.

1&9 then 2&10, then 3&11 etc, etc,  except 8 ball in the middle

no name,  but the hardest part is getting a clear shot at your next ball,  if you hit any other ball, you give the other player ball-in-hand, and they can place it anywhere they want.

That's the whole point of pool, getting the next clear shot, but yeah it's going to be a little tougher with twice as many balls.. JR

I like shooting pool when I go out to a bar. Haven't done it in a long time though. I have a mini pool table I got for Christmas a couple years ago that I have sparingly used.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I might be crazy but it's kept me from going insane- Waylon Jennings

Just once a week if that, I'd like to get a new cue, nothing fancy, but I'd also like to get a better case, maybe one that holds two.. JR

Hey Detron,,
Our friend was over so I went over your game with him for about an hour(sometimes he's not all there  ) but he got the idea(I think).. We should be going to the club tomorrow, so he wants to give it a try, I'll let you know what we think when ever we get home, probably won't be till later in the day..

Umm I have never played so you would have to show me how. But since we are at a bar we have to play for money. Say $50 a game?

I wasn't to bad at darts, my grandfather had a board in the basement, and I used to shoot from like 12ft away, and when I met my cousin and found out you only shot from like 6ft I was like omg this is going to be easy.. But rather then that I wanted to shoot pool insted.

glad you enjoyed it, it is a challenging game due to the number of balls that block a clean shot

"Hey detron"

Went to the bar again today, and of course played your game again! I must tell you about one game, I won the last game so I got to break, so I line up, get ready, and BANG! Balls scatter across the table, then plop, plop, plop and plop, sunk four balls, one in each corner on the break, best part ALL solids, no lie! So I had to go again, sunk another, then missed.. So I sunk five before his turn, but here comes the worst part, I had all solids in and was going for the 8 before he was going for his like second? Well he won, cause I ended up scratching since there were so many balls on the table :( lol

JR

that sounds about right,  you are never out of the game no matter how far behind you get.  I enjoy the game, and some times it forces me to take some EXTREMELY hard shots.

glad you like it,  that is all I have played now for the past 6 months
If I can help, let me know

there have been two times that I sunk the eight ball on the break, both times it was one of two balls to fall.

both times the other ball was the cue ball

Well not to brag, but on another game I did sink the eight on the break and I kept the cue on the table, another game(9-ball) my friend sunk the 9 but the cue flew off almost hitting one of the guys on the table next to us..

Hey Detron,

Played your game the other day, we call it 89, but that's not why I'm writing. I ran the whole freaking table in two turns, I looked at the side of the table and couldn't believe it, every solid was in, and yet only one stripe and it was one that I sunk by accident after the (8 ) fell in! Now that was tricky having to work around! But TOTALY fun!
