Skeletool with Metal File

Hi Folks, my first post here!

I've spent the past hour searching on the forum but haven't found a suggestion for this one so please excuse me if I've missed it.

I would like to swap out the knife on my Skeletool for a Metal/Wood File. It's just far more use for me in this tool. I have a knife at hand elsewhere.

Could anyone please point me in the right direction or tell me if this is not possible?

First off, welcome to the forum. :waving:

What file were you thinking of using? If it's the Wave/Charge metal file, then no. Not enough meat around the pivot, or the back of it to engage the lock and for it to rest on the frame. The pivot hole size is the same as the Skele blade but the other factors are negating this benefit.

The left one is a Wave blade that has the same pivot shape and rest as the metal file. The right one is the Skeletool blade. You'll notice the blacked out area on the Skele blade. That's the extra metal the Wave implements lack for it to be able to work in the Skele frame.



If you have some other source of file, then I'm looking forward to your thoughts. :tu:

OP do you have a dremel?

No dremel I'm afraid. I was hoping a stock file would fit but I can see now why it would not. Thank you all for your help and welcome!

It probably has the meat around the pivot. I'm guessing its to thick though and with the standard file too long.

Umm... surely the backstop engagement dimension is identical :think:

ISTM any donor with sufficient tang to relocate the pivot forward is a possibility.  I note however the curved profile of the Skeletool and the straight profile of a saw/file.  That would need some careful measurement.

How do people here start a new pivot hole?

Fair enough, question being where the heck I would even find the part :). Not going to be anywhere as accessible as a part from a wave or some other more usual LM's. The search continues if as you say it would be too thick and long. Does anyone have one who could measure pretty please?

It's hard without the pics, from what I understand he was doing it somewhere other than at the blade?

Simple answer. Yes.

But that will allow you a file/saw and the stock blade if your other fails.

but only if you carry the file/saw separately. I'm looking to replace the blade (it's illegal where I live and I have another legal knife on me) with the file.

So far I see 2 options, finding and measuring a blade exchanger. Or finding a slim file online for general garage use, and slowly and surely cutting the correct end/pivot into one.

Is it possible to remove the blade and just leave it out, will the screw still tighten down? Or will it need a spacer of equal width and will that compromise the pliers rigidity?

The selling point of Skeletool (a knife base MT) is its wonderful OHO knife, if you want it to go away, you might as well pick another MT. It is like removing pliers from a Leatherman...(which I done that) :)

The post screw would be too long without the blade installed, try put in a nylon spacer with same thickness, see how it works.
