blunt nose or needle nose
on: March 21, 2015, 12:18:36 PM
Could someone tell me what are the pros and cons between the two?  Personally, I have never found needle nose pliers to be of much use, but then I don't do a lot of electrical work.  Jut wondering since I am considering buying a Gerber and they seem to be the only ones offering a blunt nose pliers.   thanks.

Working as a electrician i use ordinairy blunt and needlenose pliërs, i like to have the Victorinox Spirit and the Leatherman Wave, at rare moments these tools are helpfull where an ordinairy pliër can not aply enough grip; it is the chimping that do the work and sometimes the chimping on a multitool is better made or is less worn off.
Each tool has its own purpose, therefore i use a lot different tools, those cannot put into one tool, a multitool will always be a solution in situations where you have to mc gyfer your way out, else many cheaper common tools are better but you can't carry a toolbox with you constantly.
The right multitool for you depends on your needs, so: what are you using your tool for..

WHS^

I find needle nose pliers better for delicate work and in some sorts of confined spaces, blunt nose pliers work better when I want to use more power (eg stronger grip on larger nuts etc) or when the longer needle nose jaws get in the way (other sorts of confined spaces).

Remember, MT pliers aren't truly needle nosed, more of a stunted hybrid.  The blunt nosed Gerber are great, but I find the standard head more universally useful.  As the others have said though, it does depend on what you are likely to be using them for.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

In general I like the blunt on the larger tools and needle on the smaller.
I try to have one of each on me or in the bag.
While I do like my blunt MP600 the Leatherman MTs I have blunted are also very good.
Happy to post pics if needed.
The in hand feel between the brands are quite different, try first if you can.

I generally prefer BN myself.  I blunted my MUT, and for me, made it much more useful.  I just used my bench grinder, and kept dipping it in water to keep it cool.

I have pics, just too hard to search using Tapatalk.

I've done them with both a hacksaw or an angle grinder and cleaned them up with a file then sandpaper.
