Real world L2D Q5 beamshots
on: May 31, 2008, 02:40:55 AM
Beamshots conducted while waiting for our dinner at an outdoor restaurant last night. I used Eneloop fresh from the pack. The target is 20 feet away using my 2 migapixels cell phone.

Wall of lanai with natural lighting and a green spotlight 20 feet away to the left. I don't like to perform beamshots on a plain white wall.

Low mode

Medium

High

Turbo

Rachel, assisted me with my beamshots and she was the second target.

Another set beamshots while waiting for our dinner. A charming and smiling target.

Sorry this 2nd set of beamshots is on low mode only. The L2D is too bright to perform and complete the next 3 shots on a a smiling target. Hehehe...

Conclusion: The Eneloop is 15.5 percent brighter that the alkaline. Hehehe..
Hope you enjoy viewing my real world beamshots.

Awesome shots. Eddi! The bright spot on turbo mode was twenty feet away? I can't wait to buy that L2d Q5!

I'm not too sure about the distance Fil. Actually, I did not measure it, just an estimate. Could be only 15 feet.
One thing for sure, the L2D Q5 is too bright for a 2XAA class.

It IS amazing how many lumens can be produced from a double-AA light, isn't it?

Lights like this were pretty much sci-fi a mere decade ago.

I bought this litle monster a while ago from DX. As-is it puts out about 120 lumens, but its narrow hotspot (narrower than the Fenix's) makes it seem brighter than it is.

I modded it with a hi-current, multi-mode board and a Q5 LED... Measured 3.48 Volts at the emitter using lithium primaries (Energizer e2), which according to CREE's white paper on the Q5 stranslates to about 220 emiter lumens.

Like I said, AMAZING! And since this is a multi-mode setup (with three power settings), I can use this light to peer inside a computer case, or light the sides of houses a 100 yards away at night.  :D

I am thinking of also getting the Ultrafire WF-606A 3W you mentioned and thanks for the info on this flashlight

How did you mod it, are there some parts to be desoldered and resordered. How much did it cost to mod it?

Eddie

(I wrote this in a bit of a hurry, so maybe not all of it will make complete sense.)

Parts used:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7882 (eventually had to buy two since the 1st one didn't work)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11022

I don't know what your level of expertise is when it comes to modding and working with small electronic devices, but modding this light isn't for newbies. You need to have a "pointy" soldering iron (for delicate work) and steady hands. Plus, the 606A's "pill" isn't at all easy to crack open.

On some pills the solder joints are visible and can easily be desoldered from the outside. On the 606A, the solder joints are on the inside. So you pretty much have to remove it using brute force. Remove the LED (be warned: that black plastic washer holding it in is VERY hard to remove), then hammer the board out through the two wire holes using a small metal rod (like a precision screwdriver). Afterwards you'll have to very carefully remove the brass ring in much the same manner. You have to do this in gradual steps; one side then the other then back again--you do not want to damage that ring. Too much force will damage the soft brass, or worse, bend it. The ring is vitally important since that is what the board solders to (regular solder doesn't stick to aircraft aluminum).

The new board is just a tad bigger, so you need to sand the edge a bit to make it fit into the ring. Plus, the wires that come with it need to be soldered in--NOT an easy task. Also, that sku.7882 board has a rather high failiure rate. It's great when you get one that works; frustrating when you get a dud. Once the new board is properly soldered to the ring, you gently force it back into the aluminum pill, making sure both wires are properly threaded through the holes.

It's a delicate process... You really have to know what you're doing. And I won't lie: a fair bit of luck also helps. I consider myself lucky that this mod worked as well as it did.

Yup, in the last photo, if you noticed I did't directly point the hot spot of my L2D on the face of the sweet beam target.
