What if you need a hammer?
on: July 28, 2008, 06:09:04 AM
What do you guys do when you have to deal with nails? Both hammering them in and pulling them out.

Have you ever hammered a nail with a multitool? Anyone have any lightweight options, tricks, etc.? Anyone just use a rock?  :D

On a whim, I picked up a little stubby clawhammer today for a couple of bucks. It weighs about 400g, has a fairly hefty head but just a short 5" plastic handle. I realized afterward it was too heavy for my edc bag, but it might be good for a light toolbag.

Anyway, that got me thinking as I have been caught without a hammer a few times. Hence, the question...

I've used the back of my hatchet a couple of times and when I didn't have that
a rock. I couldn't get the proper force needed with a MT, but I could with a rock.

If I need a hammer, I use a hammer. Not trying to be a smart-ass or anything, but that's what I use. LOL!

Yes, I was only referring to methods for dealing with situations where a regular hammer is not readily available...  ;)

He actually posted a picture of it a while back:

Actually, it looks pretty neat. Even just the head would be handy. It's hard to gauge it's dimensions and weight from that image though...

I have used a multi for some light hammerin' using either the side of the plier head, or the handles of the tool while folded.

Most times it's a dismal failure.

Fortunately, I don't encounter a lot of carpentry in my day to day travels, so it's not a big issue.

Don't use MT as hammer if its not designed with it. Might break your mt.
Multitools are the best thing that happened to mankind since the invention of the wheel!

I think the combined weight of the Surge plus your hammer would make it impossible to lift :D

There's really no substitute for a proper hammer. It's surprising how much even a little hammer can do, my favourite is a 10oz English Warrington which i've had for years, I use it for 99% of nailing jobs around the house.

I'm tellin' ya, I always have a hammer ..... always. I remember as a young lad my grandpappy telling me all I would ever need was a bigger hammer. Soooooo, I always have a hammer with me. Now, it looks funny while I'm at the beach, but at least I have it.  :D

I don't know if it is a good idea, but theoretically it would be possible for a multitool to function as handle for a hammer. It's just a matter of attaching it.

I imagine the issue would be whether the impact would damage the rest of the tool.

But even a very small lightweight hammer head is better than nothing.

I've "hammered" a bit with a MT every now and again... It doesn't work all that well. I've driven some drywall anchors a few times, and that seems to be about the usefull limit. :P When you need a hammer, what you really need is a hammer. :D       Or a set of Linesman pliers. That usually does the trick too. ;)

I am usually close to a hammer if I need 1 but the last few days we have been putting brick ties in our walls bor the block and I have been holding the nail with my LM Blast so as to not hit my nail ::) It is working rather well as a nail holder but hammer I don't think would be a good idea ;) :D
