It all depends I suppose on what your doing. I use my knife everyday on my Wave, but now there are some days I don't need to open the pliers, and there are days also where I may as well leave them open all the time cause I use them so much. Since you are a Vic man it looks like, maybe try out the swisstool or the spirit. Have heard nothing but good things about them. I carried a Case pocket knife for years, and while they are great knives, it just didn't fit the bill for what I was needing, and the Wave does this for me. I believe that every man should own at least one great multitool in his life, but sometimes a money situation can stall that.

I have one, but they are wee bit weedy (sorry SAK plier lovers).
A LM Juice is my current EDC but even with a belt pouch the weight is bothering me a bit now (not my own weight  :D).

I'm having similar thoughts about my EDC.  I'm considering dropping a plier based MT and carrying my Leatherman E306x ( I LOVE that knife) together with a Swisschamp so therefore I have small pliers and a pocketwrench so I can do nuts larger than the swisschamps capability.

When it comes to multitools, my philosophy echoes Richard Pryor's admonition about money in the 70's film "Car Wash" :

"It's better to have it and not to need it, than to need it and not to have it"

Can I get an amen, brothers and sisters!

I hate it when i'm like this  :ahhh

At the moment, my main edc is also a Vic Ranger.

It all depends upon what you need for the average day. At my last job, I used pliers all day. At my current job I barely ever need pliers. Around the house, I might need pliers - but I probably won't when I am going to the movies. So instead of a "one size fits all" approach, I carry slightly different gear for different situations.

A SAK of some sort is my normal "minimal edc". The model of SAK might change depending upon the occasion. Depending upon what I am doing, wearing, and carrying, I might then compliment the SAK with other gear.

The first addition is usually a multitool. It could be a SwissTool, Kick, or Squirt P4 depending upon what I expect to need through the day. On some days, I'll bring along some dedicated tools as well. I pretty much bring along a plier-based multitool anytime I am carrying a bag "just in case".

If I am carrying a multitool with a saw and file, I might drop the Ranger for a smaller SAK. But not matter what, I always carry at least a SAK.

And I don't have a lot of stuff either - I just have 3 SAKs and the 3 multitools I mentioned above.

Don't misunderstand - it's not like I have some sort of formal system. It's more a matter of just a split second decision of what to grab off the top of the dresser as I am heading out the door.

The reason I mention this is that many people seem to be on a quest for the "one perfect edc for all situations", but I think having a few versatile quality tools and adapting your edc to different situations is a much better approach for many people.

I have this same thing, no organized system. Regardless I know I am gonna carry my Wave, but if I know I am gonna be cutting thicker materials, I carry my Case trapper because it have the longer blade on it, and if It is gonna be a possible light day, than I carry a small Schrade USA old timer and have the Wave knife for back up if a bigger blade is needed.

This is an interesting topic. For me it comes down to this, I really want to be as self sufficient as possible and that means being prepared. Which I believe most of the people here are also striving towards. It's also nice to try and foresee as many of the possibilities as we can, unfortunately it's simply not possible to foresee all the possibilities even though we try. I honestly believe that I'm not satisfied unless I have planned for every contingency, which means things get pretty bulky and I tend to have lots of duplicate tools and "stuff". I have tools in my house, tons of tools in my garage, a small tool box in my truck, I have an assortment of tools I carry in my "brief case", I have SAK's in every vehicle I own, SAK's in my pockets, SAK's scattered around the house.  :ahhh

In my quest for simplification, I think I have overly complicated things by over thinking things a bit. Or maybe it's over obsessing.

So, what I have done for what I carry on my person is this ......... I have a two or three "rule", depending on what I'm doing. For example, since I have tools every place, when I'm at work I allow myself two on my person. This includes my Rambler on my key chain, so in reality I only get one extra. It can be any combination, one multi/one SAK or two SAK's, heck two multi's (if I don't carry my keys) but it can only be two. However, if I am out and about on my property or away from my vehicle/garage/house I allow three. My key chain Rambler, another SAK, and a multi ..... or my Rambler and two multi's if I want, but three is the limit. Anyhow, you get the idea. So far, this is working out very well and I always seem to have what I need for basic stuff.

Ok, now to fiiiiinally answer your question. Yes, gotta have the pliers.  :D

I love pliers.  I think they are the most honest extension of one's own hands--the ability to grasp and hold.

However, I rarely use them in unanticipated scenarios outside of the home.  I love having them, but almost never use them out of the home.

So, I carry plier based MT's or SAKs as I would wear a striped shirt (i.e. when the mood strikes me).

However, I will always carry at least a SAK (Alox Cadet/Bantam) and a LM Micra on the keychain when I leave the home.

Most of the time my EDC is my Vic Fieldmaster. I get along fine without the pliers. If I need them I usually have a multi-tool near me.

Yes, I use my pliers a lot. My most used tools are knife, pliers and screwdrivers.

You might try carrying a multitool with pliers for a while just to see if you actually use them. If not just EDC a SAK.
