I'm having similar thoughts about my EDC. I'm considering dropping a plier based MT and carrying my Leatherman E306x ( I LOVE that knife) together with a Swisschamp so therefore I have small pliers and a pocketwrench so I can do nuts larger than the swisschamps capability.

When it comes to multitools, my philosophy echoes Richard Pryor's admonition about money in the 70's film "Car Wash" : "It's better to have it and not to need it, than to need it and not to have it"Can I get an amen, brothers and sisters!
I'm in two minds again (this happens a lot) do I really need a multi with pliers or would my fav SAK the Vic Ranger do for my EDC needs I hate it when i'm like this
This is an interesting topic. For me it comes down to this, I really want to be as self sufficient as possible and that means being prepared. Which I believe most of the people here are also striving towards. It's also nice to try and foresee as many of the possibilities as we can, unfortunately it's simply not possible to foresee all the possibilities even though we try. I honestly believe that I'm not satisfied unless I have planned for every contingency, which means things get pretty bulky and I tend to have lots of duplicate tools and "stuff". I have tools in my house, tons of tools in my garage, a small tool box in my truck, I have an assortment of tools I carry in my "brief case", I have SAK's in every vehicle I own, SAK's in my pockets, SAK's scattered around the house. In my quest for simplification, I think I have overly complicated things by over thinking things a bit. Or maybe it's over obsessing. So, what I have done for what I carry on my person is this ......... I have a two or three "rule", depending on what I'm doing. For example, since I have tools every place, when I'm at work I allow myself two on my person. This includes my Rambler on my key chain, so in reality I only get one extra. It can be any combination, one multi/one SAK or two SAK's, heck two multi's (if I don't carry my keys) but it can only be two. However, if I am out and about on my property or away from my vehicle/garage/house I allow three. My key chain Rambler, another SAK, and a multi ..... or my Rambler and two multi's if I want, but three is the limit. Anyhow, you get the idea. So far, this is working out very well and I always seem to have what I need for basic stuff.Ok, now to fiiiiinally answer your question. Yes, gotta have the pliers. Mike

I love pliers. I think they are the most honest extension of one's own hands--the ability to grasp and hold. However, I rarely use them in unanticipated scenarios outside of the home. I love having them, but almost never use them out of the home. So, I carry plier based MT's or SAKs as I would wear a striped shirt (i.e. when the mood strikes me). However, I will always carry at least a SAK (Alox Cadet/Bantam) and a LM Micra on the keychain when I leave the home.
If I have pliers with me I usually find myself using them, were if I don't have pliers I usually manage without them. Life is usually made easier with pliers though
Yes, I use my pliers a lot. My most used tools are knife, pliers and screwdrivers. You might try carrying a multitool with pliers for a while just to see if you actually use them. If not just EDC a SAK.
