A 93mm ALOX like a Soldier/Pioneer/ Farmer (best IMHO) in the pocket + a capable fatty (in the pack) like a Ranger/Swiss Champ (best IMHO) etc.

It partly depends what sort of camping you mean. I love my Surge to bits but I don't think I would take it in a backpack - way too heavy and I'm not a fan of accessories that can be lost. Are pliers really necessary?
I'm also not a fan of combos - they say to me that each each is lacking in something.

I would go for some sort of larger SAK as others have mentioned. For me it was the Wenger Ranger. :) http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52248.msg979541.html#msg979541

But one with tweezers may be more useful.

The forester sounds like a good idea. Bring pliers too!

For someone who's not into knives and tools or getting all Ray Mears when they're camping, a Huntsman would cover the basics rather nicely.  I'd add a small knife for food prep, something like  THIS too - cheap easy to clean, bright colour so you can find it on the floor, sheath to cover the blade and totally inoffensive.

I'd not argue with the Farmer/Huntsman faction, because they are both great all rounders, but I think the Caot hit the nail on the head with the Swisstool. All the tools you could need, plus extras, cos you never know,Vic quality, and idiot proof,no offence to your friends!

Failing that,108mm GAK >:D
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I think a Rebar would be a good choice or a Supertool if you think they might want something heavier duty.

Me, too. If I'm going camping, I'll have a FAK with tweezers and scissors of some kind (I often put Slip-N-Snip's in small FAKs). Pliers are just so good to have when you need one, I can't imagine not taking an MT with one.

Better yet, for around the same money or just a few dollars more, get a Mora. Bit more versatile. :)

You guys are so helpful.
When Grant and I go camping this Summe I think we will have enough multitools and knives for a life time.

I had been thinking about another family. They never have a lot of this stuff. So I was thinking something rather unassuming. I wanted a Farmer for this style of 'camping' before. But I was convinced that I should go with the Vic OHT. I really wish I had a cork screw on it though.

I really love the Farmer. I still want one. I still don't have anything alox...

From this conversation I have learned that I will need a giant rubbermaid bin filled with many multitools. All of the multitools.  :ahhh :ahhh

Grant and I are going camping once the weather warms up a bit. Maybe we will bring a collection out and see which one we use the most.

From my lot, if I had to only take one general purpose tool, it would be a Wenger Ranger model, with the big saw and the big locking blade

I have something similar - lives with my spork, plate and cup as a dedicated food knife.

I think the OHT is a good start. Its a larger knife that is less likely to cause hand fatigue and...

Tweezers: Ticks and splinter removal.
Toothpick; Can operner and Wood saw pretty self explanatory.
Main blade: Food prep and steak knife.
Flathead and wire stipper: Breaking into your car and hot wiring it when you have lost your keys.
Awl: Making musical instruments.
Phillips: BBQ repairs.
Eventually even McGyver got himself a Leatherman

back in the day I got a long fine with just a Camp King or Demo knife. I think if you had a Supper Tinker or Climber or bigger SAK you would do fine add a PST II, PST, kick, wingman, Side kick or Rev or larger multitool you would be pretty well set.
I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Anything not requiring scissors?  Or a one hand blade? Or a one hand anything?
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

I would go for a 108 mm sak.
Good blade length
Good strong saw and combo tool
Feels good in the hand.
My favorite size plus nice and light

That's too bad, I was just preparing myself for a ST300 vs Surge battle ...  :duel:

P.S. I own both and I would pick the ST300 every day of the week and twice on sunday  :D.

I've read a bunch of ST300 vs Surge debates on different forums last week trying to decide between the two, and I ended up buying my Rebar's big brother off ebay

A huntsman for sure for camping.  Small, light weight, affordable.   :tu:

Even the much hated hook on back can be used for pulling tent stakes.
