Smooth VS Textured
on: July 29, 2008, 09:59:34 PM
While on my little trip i did a couple of hours night riding and had both my L2D (smooth) and a small bike light to illuminate my passage, this worked ok, the L2D providing good illumination of far off things but i was lacking a flood beam to give the immediate road illumination, the little bike light wasn't much help.

Could someone post (or link) to a picture comparing the smooth and textured reflectors of a L2D as i'm contemplating getting a textured one to give a more floody beam to pair with my smooth one.

Well, I could have a few months ago but I sold the textured one I had.  :(

I typically prefer the smooth reflector for an outdoor light, and the textured one for EDC or indoors.  The textured one is definitely a bit "floodier" in the hotspot.  It reduces the throw, but it also reduces the dreaded Cree "ring".

I am very fortunate to have a Cree P4 L2D with smooth reflector that is focused properly and has a minimal ring.  It throws at least as well as a Q5 with textured reflector.  I have two other textured L2Ds as well, but they are Rebel 100s, so they wouldn't be a fair comparison.  The Rebels have a VERY smooth beam with the textured reflector.

I'm sure you will.

I find that a good combination is an L2D w/textured reflector mounted on the bars and a smooth reflectored one on the helmet.

Duly noted, ta. I have been trying out different placements on the handle bar this morning, not tried any helmet mounting yet, not even sure if my helmet will let me use the normal lockblocks.

Thanks for the help :)
