I've a problem, I am not sure I want help with?
on: May 07, 2015, 05:27:35 PM
Hi all, I've been lurking these boards for a short time but have read a lot of great things, ideas an just general craziness an feel I want to fit in with you at MTO.
Its crazy but I've a fondness for many of you like a good friend from reading forums, an I am new to all of you. Hopefully I can give some MT brotherly love back that is enjoyed by you all.

OK, my name is Miknitro, I use to race RC 4x4 trucks, was fun but taxing to get a group together.
I still kept one truck for them special days, I couldn't get money back out of it in a sale so its my shelf queen for periods of time now.

Now me like all of you, am into lights, knives, MTs etc, an knowing this I usually am carefully about how far done the rabbit hole I go with a indulgence err hobby ☺.

But I'm sensing a slippery slope I'm not sure I can navigate alone or feel I want to avoid here, so maybe I can fit in this gathering of very fine folks like yourselves an find my niche idk.

OK, been a mechanic or working as one on an off since I was 14, cars trucks etc, if it has locomotion or an engine, I lived it. Drove heavy an light trucks an currently between adventures, not for long though

Don't want to pull wrench for living anymore, so this dinosaur is checking new valleys.

Now about being here an how my MT journey started. In 2006 I got caught with enough tools to unwrap a coat hangar that wrapped itself around a front axle shaft on my RC truck in gravel pit. Ending my day, sad camper I was. Little time passed an while perusing SnapOn truck spitted a possible aide, Leatherman Fuse. Bought it on spot.
Tried to wear in deployment like any other knife tool etc. But this proved mind boggling to me, I worked it for hours on hours with good machine oil an it never got smoother, but my knuckles learned new sore spots to this day from closing them inside handles closing an opening the Fuse.

Time went on, this year my son turned 24, I thought a MT might fit the bill. Even with nightmare recollection of breaking Fuse in.
So I started googling, picked most popular MT an read review upon review, a lot by !any of you fine folks, err well peeps lol. Itty poke.

It was the the Wave, bought it, thought I better lube it up a bit prior to giving to my son an I was hooked on a new adventure.
I bought another Wave for myself an have walked my son through a initial break in an tune up of things like blade edge, joint care an tool tips that need squaring. His birthday was may 1, he loves his Wave an accessories as much as I do.
With this in my mind, I thought wife might like a small one for her crafts, so I picked a new Squirt PS4 (12\14) an gave it a break in an adjust with a high polish (Blue rouge). She loves it to say the least an was happy to be given such a high quality feeling too...err instrument. ☺
I also fell in love with Squirt series, so I scored one for front pocket carry myself.
Now my problem I enjoy but fear could get out of hand. I can't put or leave my extra tools at home.
With my knives, I broke it down to two edc, one clean polished ground, an one worker.
Two is one, one is none, right?? ☺☺
Same with lights, one longer run time, an one small to drop in pocket with other items.

Now MTs lol, my Fuse has given me arthritis breaking zytel liner grips on plier heads an I can't ever leave it behind, or for long an not feel naked even with my Wave an accessories on belt, odd huh?
OK, well now I've a PS4 in front pocket, so three edc, an I just finished breaking in a Style PS, yes I know redundancy, but its my souls bread an better feeling. So I've a Style PS on keychain.
I want a TTI non CC at some point, but think a Surge is next...good grief I'm a small man by stature an I'm packing more knives an tools then a Chinese restaurant in back of a automotive shop downtown. What do I do lol, hope the Surge assures me enough to leave my Wave or fuse at home? I'm sure hoping so guys lol, not sure I care though ☺

Yup, definitely got a problem. Not much diversity of brands there :P ;) only kidding, I like the Wave and Fuse too, though I can't stop taking them apart and tweaking them a bit

Welcome aboard mate. Your exploration into the world of multitools has just started

1) Welcome!
2) Well... it's too late NOW! Just give your bank account number to some reputable MT dealer and be done with it. :D
3) You WILL own a Victoinox Spirit MT before too long, hanging around here. Probably a Cadet or Farmer Swiss Army Knife as well... to start...
4) Been reading for a while, huh? I'll ... umm... Well, I'll still PRETEND to be normal for a bit.

Welcome to the forum  :tu:

I agree, the surge is nice
But, don't overlook some of LM's retired classics. The Original Supertool and ST200 are fabulous, as is the Core.

Enjoy  :salute:
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Great post  :tu:.  Carrying MTs is about what it makes us feel like and having capability to be a solution if/when stuff comes up, at least for me.  Good to see you got the family some tools as well.  I am a huge Wave fan so I can totally relate to the feeling I get from having it on my belt as you do.  LOVE the POLISH job  :salute: it looks fantastic.

With so many great tools having a few on you at all times is perfectly normal.

Glad to have you aboard and welcome.

Again, many thanks guys.
Mr626, yes at some point I may start down that road too. I've to learn to love them honestly.

Aloha, salute, you were instrumental in my choice going with the Wave when I got into this here.
I can only say you were correct in your writings, its a darn good tool. The devout swung me with reason an good writings to search for.
I should also note Chako in that decision too, very knowledgeable folks like yourselves an others here made me keep reading an finally register.
Thank you about my Wave, I want to get a few more, and turn one into a high polish for someone to put away, maybe trade idk.
I do it in my hand using my skin an bloods thermal to heat sink steel so I never over heat, but want to try some French rouge I've acquired on one entirely.
I'll probably wind up doing some in each line of LT.

Guess I started so to speak.☺

Welcome aboard from a fairly new to the group guy!  I carried the same knife, a SAK Huntsman, for over 30 years.  We got my Dad a PST back when they were a new idea in 1984, but the MT fever didn't hit me until a couple years back.  I'm currently at 3, with more coming soon!  It's a great hobby, and they are collectibles that you can actually use, and don't cost a fortune or take up (very) much space.

With all due respect to Kampfer, he's very set in his ways (as am I), but try not to get too caught up in the branding. You could easily miss out on tools which could work verywell for you. Leatherman tends to get a bit of flak from me, but there's still some of their tools that I hold in high regard. It took me a while to appreciate the older Leatherman tools, took me a while to appreciate Gerber, and and indeed took me a while to appreciate what does and doesn't work for me in a multitool.

Irrespective of which tools you fall in (and out of) love with on your exploration, there's a fantastic group of people here, and I'm sure you'll really enjoy it here

Have fun, try new stuff, and blame Kirky whenever it seems appropriate  :D

Welcome to the insane asylum called MTO!

Fair warning, it's going to be all downhill from here... When I first came here, I promised myself I would not start collecting tools just for collecting tools... And last month alone I ordered 4 SAKs exactly for that reason

In any case, good to have you here!

Having a few multi-tools is like hedging your bets.  ;)

Thanks guys, wise words too.
I sensed some ambivalences in Leatherman forums, that I did not get from elsewhere. Reminds me of blade forums at one point years ago, you were either spyderco or benchmade, an many were less then a honest man about their respects on views.

No fear, I have little like for other then one, maybe two tool OEMs I consider worthy. So I should never be found in alternate forums much.

I've found some OEMs knives for example really to be just a transitional step to better ones, and their tools the same thing, if they make them too.  No names mentioned but my feelings are strong on my like and dislike of things.

Again thank you kind folks for the welcome and advice to always consider.
Red/green, what a thought, I usually say that same quote to others when helping them out of a pickle lol, thanks for belly laugh.

Also, My funny noob thought I had last night, I've a fair amount of tools in my garage, but while taking apart my LT Fuse, I used two Leatherman to take it apart, first thing handy, is the first thing one reaches for. To use it, you have to pack it!

I am not a brand guy, I am a MT guy. :D

1. I like most the LM offers, but when they screwed up, I gave it to them straight. http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,58570.msg1067182.html#msg1067182
2. I tried many Gerbers because members here recommend them, but I didn't like any of them.
3. I also tried Victorinox spirits, but its handles are misaligned.
4. I am impressed with a MT of no brand, http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,59199.0.html
5. SOG MT, I like some of them. http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,58374.msg1073898.html#msg1073898

Thanks for the informative background about choice of yours good man.

I find no brand makes everything great, but some have more hits then others. This can be enough to keep my interests if their wares fills my needs an or desires as not many can say, that some form of  esthetics didn't play a part in their choice.

Your choice of item might be better in your usage but may not apply to others, so I see no need to trash what I don't lean towards, its helping someone so its a win-win still even if I choose not to desire or covet it enough to get my own.

As well, I can be honest an trash my chosen items where needed too, I can't recommend my choices without much thought as my LTs all have been gritty Grundy feeling out of the box. That would be a bad experience for say a SAK guy, but if he knew to overlook that an lube an do a initial break in, life would be easy.
I like a rough edge, let's me put my touches on it an enjoy it a little more though that definably will not be acceptable to others in cases.

In my RC days, some built their trucks from ground up, others bought turn key solutions. Same or similar traits to me with tools as well.

Idk, hope that makes sense to show I'm not noob to choices, an can accept others while maintaining my own identified wares.

So guys from all OEM, rock on, just because I don't care for others or some doesn't mean I think they're trash, just not applicable to my usage or tastes or both.

To stray away from OEM topics a bit...

Do I try bluing the steel of my Fuse or not?

Undecided, need thoughts?
I'd do mild heat bake style, so very basic BO with cold blue tinge to it??

Idk.

Edit to add, its so cold it may be hard to see.
