Cap Crimper - anyone use this?
on:
September 30, 2016, 10:19:23 AM
Hi folks,
Years ago I bought my first LM - the Charge XTi which had this "feature". Had no idea about tools and thought it would be usefull someday. Hmm. I was wrong.
Last week I shot a NIB black Blast from the bay which also has the Crimper (didnt know that before buying). So here I am, having another tool with this kind of pliers.
Is there anyone who actually uses that? Cant imagine lots of folks beeing into that "blow stuff up"-business.
Regards
Michael

It can crimp lot of things. I use it mainly to crimp large size (yellow) abiko connectors. It also works nicely prying zipties open when you cannot get close enough with the cutters.
They arent that important to me and that is why started to use Wave instead of TTi.

I think the SOG solution is better for most users. As noted very few people are going to use them all the time and it will probably not be worth the weakened pliers. Due to how SOGs gears cover the crimper while folded it doesn't interfere with the rest of the tool and then it's a very good thing to have. The Original PST should be able to have a similar solution to SOGs implemented fairly easily, although that would weaken the pivots.

Not a fan at all actually. I would like to see the TTi have the option of a non CC plier. The Ti is one of my favorites in the series because its non CC plier head.

They come in handy once in awhile and I have quite a few but in general it's kind of a novelty feature and they look cool but I now prefer the regular pliers most of the time.

I generally don't ever use them. If I need to crimp anything I use the ones below the pivot.

To me they are useless
They weaken the pliers and also take away griping area from the pliers
And they do not crimp the sort of things that I would need to crimp - Eg electrical connectors (eg in light fittings), or bike gear/brake cables etc.
I guess that hole/crimper is totally specific to the mining blasting cap - and who ever uses one of those? - unless you work in the mines/with explosives
!!
Never really understood why that feature is so common.
I was wrongly shipped a CC Wave recently - So had to exchange it - The supplier had no idea what it was for or why I would want to exchange it!!

The strongest part of the normal part of the needlenose portion of the pliers is usually where they go, so that's a no go for me. The only tool miners I knew that handled explosives used was their old hawkbills, not a DET multitool.
I wouldn't buy a DET tool, but for some reason, this thread has got me wanting an old detonator.

I like it on my TTI. I use it to grab and pull something that is stuck like a zipper or something that would normally slip off of the needle nose teeth.

I've always wondered why LM mass produces a tool with a feature like that, one that is completely exclusive to a singular use that not many people are even aware of. It'd be like trying to market a safety wire plier multitool. Most of the world doesn't even know what safety wire is, and the tool would be useless to them.

It makes the tool tactical
It adds another tool, without hugely affecting the pliers function
Maybe they were hoping to get some army contracts and they missed out
Maybe a lot more people need this than we realise.
.....however if you need this regularly you will most likely have a dedicated tool.
