Leatherman Modding Thoughts, Ideas, and Questions
on: August 18, 2015, 10:11:01 PM
Hi, new guy here. I've been browsing here for a bit, and had some ideas and thoughts on modding a full sized leatherman to fit my needs. so, here goes.
1) what other brand tools can fit into a leatherman (nothing I can't handle with a Dremmel tool). I saw an article on another website about sog tools (dont fit on LM, but LM should fit on SOG). What about Gerber? or even Victorinox?
2) has anyone tried to take the compound leverage bit from a SOG and tried to put LM's jaws on it (for super steel cutting action!!). But really, this seems like it would be a great mod for those who deal with lots of very hard, thick wires.
2b) would you be able to put a Victorinox 91mm metal file/saw on a LM? (assuming length fits). I've heard they are fantastic, is the width and broadness similar to LM tools?
3) Is there a comprehensive list of Gerber, SOG and LM tools similar to the Victorinox list( i think its on felinevets website)? Is there anywhere with specific tool comparisons across brands, besides side by side comparisons of multitools? Like comparing the Philips on a  Tinker vs a Kick's Phillips? More than anything, I feel like a list of this nature would be incredibly beneficial to the modding community

Thanks for taking the time to read this wall of text, hopefully you guys will be able to shed some light on these questions i have

Welcome to the forum sLaughterMed.

Why isn't there a list? Just way too many variables. And everyone does it differently.

We're happy to help if we can but you need to know where you're going.

Yeah there is much much much more than the Top 4 brands that would need comparisons.

Welcome to the community though!

I'm sure our mod squads will be sure to be more specific in a few!

Victorinox scissors fit LM with a little bit of help from a dremel, a few examples in the mini-surge threads.
Surge, Wave, Rebar, Micra, C33x

Eh, it was worth asking about a list. Cool on the scissors fitting Leathermans, I may have to kill a couple swiss army knives for their parts...

Victorinox file will fit inside a Kick/Rebar etc (if you open out the pivot hole) but won't lock, opens past 180° and may drop too far into the tool to open easily. :-\

Im very new to the scene, and aside from taking apart a LM sidekick to see how it ticks, its just ideas. I was looking to see if a vic file or scissors would fit into a rebar with enough effort, as I haven't seen either in any previous threads so far. I also really like the idea of having a jigsaw blade adapter in a Super tool 300. Someone did it with an EOD version into the standardST 300, but will a Gerber saw coupler from an mp600 fit into the LM pivot hole?

Victorinox file and scissors into a Rebar.
Has been done, I don't think they locked and there may have been an issue with the scissors pushing up in the handle.

Jigsaw adapter into a ST300. [I want that ST300 EOD blade adapter.]
The one from Gerber should fit ok but like the Victorinox parts I don't think they are big enough to work with the lock tab.
I could be wrong though.

I think that replacing the LM saw (or maybe can opener?) with the ST3000 EOD saw adapter would be my perfect Heavy duty Multi tool. I tried a brand new Surge at a pawn shop once, and I just hated how it felt in my hand both pliers open and closed. The Rebar actually feels better than the ST300, but I like to carry that sans sheath (fits nicely next to phone on small pocket hook), which really defeats the purpose of having a saw adapter...  So ST300 with sheath and all the bells and whistles....
