Thanks. I have had a little practice. Those are old photos however, I think circa 2009 when I was using horse hide as a background.

I can do it but prefer to just pull out the tools unique to the pattern esp on older knives. No reason to stress those old backsprings.

And yes, the first week I had my first SAK (a Champion in '72) I cut my finger pulling all the blades out. :D

I have always found the back tools the most challenging, especially on the 5 layer models.

I generally don't open all the tools. It puts a lot of stress on the knife, and particularly with older knives there's the chance of breaking a spring. Not worth the risk.

If I do, I do it systematically. Meaning, never leave two tools half open on the same backspring.

For instance on a Vic alox Pioneer on the opener layer I open the bottle opener all the way and the can opener half way, so only the can opener is stressing the backspring. And then I open the blade all the way and the awl half way to do the same. Only one tool stressing the backspring but all the tools are clearly visible. :salute:

I have done it with every knife I owned for a photo shoot for this site...and never had a single issue.

Better be safe than sorry. ;)

For quick pic purposes it isn't such an issue. But if you leave the backsprings canoed like that for extended periods, like in a display, that might be a problem.

This is my approach as well.  The only downside is that the back tools are all opened the same amount.

I've broken springs twice, which was twice too many.   :ahhh

How did you get the horse to stand still is what I am wondering?

Better than taking it with him still around. :dwts:

That would not be a happy horse!!
