How do YOU sharpen your Leatherman blades?
on: September 14, 2015, 06:33:16 AM
I'm just curious. How do YOU sharpen your Leatherman blades?

Recently I got a Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal,and I guess it's ok. I'm not very good with sharpening stones. :P

My LMs came pretty sharp so all I typically do is a few laps on my Lansky ceramic rods at the end of the day.  I have also stropped them as needed.  If I have neglected to do either or need to actually sharpen rather than hone then I use my Lansky Turn Box system.  I also have Lansky Sharpening System if I want to reprofile an edge.

Lansky Sharpening Kit + Leather strop

Spyderco Sharpmaker is probably better but I could get a bunch of Leathermans for what it costs  :D

Depends on the condition of the blade and what's to hand:

Victorinox sharpener, diamond pen sharpener, Worksharp, strop, stone, emery, steel, diamond steel, oil stone, waterstones, diamond files, wall, paving stone, mug.......

I have a KME diamond system, it's a guided gizmo. I got it for my slip joints so I use it for everything now.

Key is to not let your edge dull to the extent that you are "sharpening".  If possible after a days usage a few swipes on a ceramic rod or leather strop should get the edge back up to snuff.  If you worked your blade hard and need to remove a bit more material to bring the edge back then honestly any of the above will work.  A member has a 4 rod turn box for sale which again IMO is a decent capable tool for most needs.

I try to maintain my blades as best I can. I try to not file or grind my blades so I rely on a tungsten burnisher and a good leather strop to keep the burr under control. When I have to remove material I use a fine porcelain puck then finish on rubber then canvas then leather.

I heard them 701 rods are no good. Probably should just send them to me for disposal.

I like my Sharpmaker or Worksharp power sharpener to sharpen all my knifes. Once they are sharp I use a ceramic rod to keep up the edge. http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/AC71/ceramic-sharpening-rod

I do touch-ups on a ceramic stone/rod, but I'll be honest I've never done real sharpening.  I've never put an edge on a blade or anything.

The Sharpmaker puts a good full prof edge on a knife. If the blade is badly worn it needs to be thinned you can do it on a Sharpmaker but it is really slow. The work Sharp does a good fast job.  Or a work sharp field sharpener.

The Work Sharp is amazingly fast and easy to learn and use, easier than the Sharpmaker, IMO.

As much as I like the Worksharp it removes a lot of metal if your blade is all ready thinned the Worksharp IMO is over kill. That's when a Sharpmaker comes in handy. I have a friend that is a retired meat cutter and is still using the first knifes he bought as a apprentice he kept them sharp on his steel and only used his bench stone when needed. I do the same with my knifes I put a good edge on them then keep them will tuned with a cerrimic rod.

Certainly, the first time one sharpens with the Work Sharp, the blade will have to be reprofiled a bit because the Work Sharp puts on a convex edge (unless the knife already has a convex edge). But after that, the blade can be touched up with the 6000 fine belt just like with a fine stone or whatever else one normally wants to use for touch up. Strop can work.

I tend not to use the knife blades because I was never good at sharpening. Usually btw the time mine get dull I get a new tool. Scissors and awls are useful in place of the knife.

Almost all of the leatherman tools I've owned have had sharp blades, and I've just kept them sharp with ceramic rod thingy.

Looks like this...
