Collecting canes and walking sticks.
on: September 20, 2015, 04:19:42 PM
Dang, I just noticed I am up to 25 pieces now. This collection happened when I saw a beautiful walking stick at a local artists show. Before I knew it, that single piece turned into 2, etc... I originally had them in a large metallic vase but soon outgrew that. I then bought a white plastic garbage pail. Not as decorative as the vase, but a whole lot more utilitarian. I think I am soon growing out of space...and that might be a good check on this collection.

Dang that collection is getting big, you trying to hide that diamond willow I like  .. My collection still sits at two, someone was suppose to be making me another but I haven't heard from them in a while. And in that other post from way back I was after one I could just beat up and use as a everyday beat up for when the back gives out, I thought of going to lowes, and just getting a cheap rake chopping it off and putting a rubber end on it, but I've had my eye on a wax wood staff, used for karate, there's a few videos on the one brand, I'm talking smashing car windows, denting the corners of the car, and it don't break.. Just put a rubber end on and make a paracord handle, there also cheap, but then shipping is like the same price as the stick so I kinda just gave up..

With my bad knees, I've been wondering if I will need one some day... I think JerseyDevil has a collection too?

Nice collection Chako

I like the collection.  Since we just started going on hikes, I would like to find  two of them for me and the wife to take with us.  Cant seem to find any cool wooden ones locally.

Here's a few I keep in an umbrella stand next to the door. Always grab one on the way out.

How long are those?  Looking for about six feet ones if they make them that size anywhere.  If not, have to see what is the biggest size.

These where all made 35 inches exactly. I am 5 foot 9 and one half inches tall, and I made them to fit me. You make your own and you cut them to whatever size you want. Hiking sticks for the woods can be longer, but I find the walking stick sized for my hight and build to be better all around.  It's so easy and fun to make your own, why buy them? American hornbeam, hickory, ash, all make great walking sticks.

Lovely pieces cbl51. I joke that if I ever needed a cane or a hiking stick, I am covered.

You mean Chako has a collection of something?? Whaa?

In all seriousness i used to have a walking stick collection from scouts. Any down time I was usually carving.

Most of them rotted away but I might have a box of cured ones in the attic.

My favorite was a 5' blank with 4 wooden carved chain links, then another foot of blank.

I wasn't allowed to carry it because it was considered a weapon............

You mean the aaa Maglite flashlight drilled through? There's a whole bunch of other stuff under the paracord handle, a fishing kit, zip ties, small saw, and a few other things, it's just been so long I can't remember..
