Wave blade replacement
on: September 09, 2015, 07:38:04 AM
Cheers everyone.
Feel like replacing a 420hc blade on my wave with something more robust and reliable. Options are pretty standard - 154cm or s30v. Which one should I choose? What are the pros and cons of them?

Well, first question that came into my mind - where will you get the replacement blades? They are not sold separately.
I like the S30V-blade on my Charge TTi.

Actually you can buy blades from Texas Tool Crafters pretty often.

154cm sharpens easy, does not chip readily and the edge does not last as long as S30V.

S30V is not to bad to sharpen also has no chipping issues and imo is more stainless the 154CM.

I'd go S30V

Harley is Correct

TTC or a random Ebay seller is your best bet.

I personally prefer the 154cm because it is easier to sharpen. Just my preference :salute:

I also like 154 as well however if you have a good sharpening system S30V won't be an issue.  I think the prices are affordable enough to get both and see for yourself what works best.

So I did it and I chose 154cm, mainly due to a deal I have found - just 12$ for the replacement blade. Was fairly simple, took about 10 minutes to do the job.

Our Special Forces depended and survived on the 420hc blades for years in Afghanistan and Iraq.  What is it that you will be doing that is so much more rugged and intense?

Ha, absolutely

Well maybe I just was out of luck with mine, but first I once opened to see the blade chipped on day 3 for no reason at all - I only used it to cut some paper and fabric and it never fell down. Ok, fixed that. Next - opened a bottle of wine with it just for fun, the slightest of touches to glass accidentally- chipped again.

I have 3 Wave blades at the moment really - two 420hc and one 154cm, which is now being used. So just in case I brought all those to get professionally sharpened and the guy who always does the job at a knife store told me that actually the replacement 420hc seems harder than the stock 420hc I had stock, nothing to talk about 154cm.

Once again, maybe I just was out of luck, but who cares now - replaced :)
