Gas bottle BBQ
on:
September 26, 2015, 12:38:30 PM
So I wanted to make a BBQ small enough to take car camping, no holes in the bottom to protect the grass
I was going to wait before posting so I could show it in action, but time
...
Dumped Gas bottle and a charity shop fruit bowl
Need some sort of jig to do a level cut
Yep that works
Cut some bits off the bottom
Give him a smile
Chop up the fruit bowl
Added cake rack (might need more work
)
Just need to test it now, probably not much good for backpacking
Everything’s adjustable

Thanks Guys
I am hoping it will ‘draw’ when there’s a fire or I will have to drill a few extra holes
I’m sure Smashie and Mr W are reaching for their disc cutters as we speak

Oh wow what a great shape!
As long as the fruit bowl is up high enough you should get enough air flow down there. I only use charcoal. Yum.

I actually tried it and it worked. It would have been better if I had pressed them...they were a bit crumbly. I found people using small presses improvised with caulk guns and PVC tubing.

I've had a couple old bottles waiting for a few years now, just haven't got around to deciding on a design and going for it.

You probably know that you have to fill the bottles with water first to get the gas out
And if you don’t have a disc cutter a jig saw will work as well
I used metal hole cutters and a jigsaw for the smile

For Smashie,
who for some reason
is reluctant to hack up a pressurized calor gas bottle with a disc cutter...

Didn’t draw well so make holes in top bigger and add vent below door
Works a bit better, takes ten minutes to boil 1 pint of water

Sorry to hijack. Great concept. I did mine almost the same 20 years ago and still going strong. On the 4th ash grit now. Chimney and legs screw off and fit inside. Had 3 paint jobs in all these years.
