Surge Clip Fix Mod
on: December 07, 2015, 03:58:07 PM
Been posting a lot and getting questions about my fix to the Surge clip. So I decided to do a quick walk through of what I did so that it's available to everyone who's interested.

I can't take full credit for this, as I recall reading something about using glue and a spacer and other similar tricks in other threads elsewhere in the forum. This is just how I did it. :salute:

What you'll need:
-1 or more Surges (works on old and new models)
-2x Security Torx T10 bits and something to drive them
-Epoxy (I prefer 5 minute JB weld clear version)
-LM Pocket Clip
-Lighter or heat source that can be concentrated on the pivot head
-Loctite or other thread locker (optional)

What you need to do:
1. Gently heat the pivot of the tool end where the clip fits in
2. Use the Torx bits to loosen the pivot screw (you need 2 for the new Surge but can use 1 for the old Surge)
3. At this stage, you should be able to remove the screw from the bolt and take of the end cap (if not and the pivot is installed in reverse, note the order of parts and washers so that you can reassemble the tool)
4. Reference the attached pic to see the part that needs to be glued
5. Clean all contact areas thoroughly to ensure there is nothing to interfere with the epoxy adhering
6. Mix up a small batch of epoxy
7. Carefully apply a small smear to the raised nub that was highlighted in the picture
8. Replace the end cap and screw it down snug (you can adjust for tool tension later). Ensure the end cap is lined up with the handle scale and not at some weird angle.
9. Wipe away any excess epoxy from the outside of the end cap
10. Insert the clip into the slot and remove it
11. Clean off any stray epoxy from the clip
12. Repeat step 9-10 as needed until the clip comes out clean
13. Double check your end cap alignment
14. Let the epoxy set (even though I used 5 minute epoxy, I let it set for a couple of hours just to be safe)
15. Once the epoxy is set up, you can adjust the pivot to set the tool retention to your liking. At this stage you can use Loctite or some other thread locker to secure the screw.

Now you're all set to clip and go!

Note 1: If you prefer to put the clip on the opposite handle, you can. Just take apart that handle side instead and remove the built in lanyard loop. Now the clip will fit in that side of the handle instead.

Note 2: As far as I can tell, this won't work on a Wave as the contact point is too small. I've also never had a problem with the clip when installed on a Wave or Charge. YMMV. From what I have seen, the major problem with the Surge is that the end cap can rotate and cause the clip to no longer line up with the tool handle and the lock bar. This allows the clip to work loose and is just all around annoying.

Caveat Emptor: I am not responsible if your pants fall down while carrying your Surge with the clip. It is up to you to ensure that your garments are properly rated and secured for the weight load. ;)

I'm sure epoxy works great. I used superglue and dropped it in from the top. Holds up fine so far and if i ever need to remove it i can bust it off.

Did you glue the clip itself? Or just the end cap?

I chose not to use superglue as even the gel stuff tends to run into places that I don't want it to go.

I started with the cap and used an accelerator so it didn't run.

It started wobbling a week later so I glued the whole thing in.
