Return of the sheath/pouch?
on:
August 17, 2008, 06:49:27 PM
In the world today of knives and tools with pocket clips, is it possible that the sheath is making a comeback in todays world? I have seen so many more people carrying tools and knives in sheaths than on clips in the past year. I know back before the smaller cellphones, people always said if you carried a knife or tool in a sheath you were old fashioned, but now with cellphones becoming smaller people are carrying them in pouches, and now people are carrying knives and tools in pouches and nothing is being said. I personally like the pocket clip carry myself, but sometimes isn't always the best way to carry. Do you think this is true, or am I just imagining things? Also could be too in some cities where open carry is illegal people are carrying horizontal on a sheath so it isnt so obvious.

i vote for pouches, sheaths and belts,i do my carryings 99 percently in with sheath of some sort.
and bring those good old school leather sheaths back,or atleast rip off any velcros from cordura sheaths.and DONT mix any kind of cloth and leather together, atleast
please dont
put stretchy cloth to go with leather.

I had said in another post too I would like to see LM make a nylon sheath with a snap button. I have a ballistic nylon sheath that doesn't have the stretchy material anywhere on it. I like it because it seems sturdy and doesnt bulk out on my side. It says it is for the old wave but it works for my new one too.

The only problem I have with nylon sheaths is the velcro closure wearing out after time.
I would like to see a snap button on a nylon sheath as well.

How about magnetic snaps?

nope thanks.in hard situations it would be good to have so few magnetic objects with u .any magnetics would disrupt the use of compass.

They are fine for light duty cellphone pouches, but aren't strong enough to keep closed in any physical activity. My full size MT see a lot of use on my belt while skiing and I won't trust a magnetic snap.
On a semi related note I like vecro best for physical activity since even when partially open they can "reset" themselves when pushed together again. Another thing is some sheath like leatherman's will hold tool somewhat even when the flap is open, whereas sog's as soon as the flap is open PLOP the tool drops out. I'm building up a powerlock for skiing since leatherman rusts too easy with all the water, but the sog sheath is a bit of concern.

I am a sheath carry guy most of the time
I like Velcro but it can wear out
but I have also had snap to fail on me as well
So it all boils down to preference and/or what's available and what you are looking for (if it's availiable)
Good thread

I can easily sew on new velcro. Installing a new snap is a lot harder.

I got a nylon sheath with my Skeletool and haven't used it once. If it weren't filled with foam and more form fitted, I would consider it. It's far too bulky for me when I put my Skeletool inside so I end up just using the clip.
I have a bike specific MT (hex keys, pedal wrench, tire lever, chain tool, etc) and it has a very good nylon sheath. It's fitted to the tool and doesn't create needless bulk.
