Wave with Vinyl Sticker Handle
on: October 20, 2015, 07:34:14 AM
So I played with my Wave today...I work at a sign shop so we have
lots of those extra odd pieces of vinyl stickers. What I did today is made a pattern
to cover the handle matte black with the sticker. It will hold up pretty well, better than
paint and won't chip off and protects the surface as well. Here are a few shots. :D
It's not that perfect on the edges but works.

I like it. I would be tempted to do some sort of pattern.

thanks guys!

yup, it will be easier and better to wrap the sticker if you can disassemble the multi-tool, which i don't have the tools and the guts to do.

cheers!

That's awesome.

I've wrapped my trailers and 2 box trucks and the wave looks much much easier.

Is the vynl laminated?

Someone's could even do....I don't know....maybe a Multitool.org design on it?

Did the same but with Talon pistol rubberized grip tape, the tool feel secure in your hand, absolutely no slip with sweaty hands, big improvement on grip and comfort.

I've been toying with that idea for a while, to put some sort of tape on my Vic Spirit to make it less slippery but I didn't know how well it would it adhere to the metal and how much would that improve grip. I was looking at gaffer tape but meh, I don't think it'll stay on for long.

Do tell, please, in your opinion, do the vinyl strips improve grip and are they likely to become unglued under stress? That Wave looks good, by the way :tu:

If you want something that will adhere well and offer incredible grip then look at "grip tape" they use for skateboards. Might be to grippy though. Stuff is like sand paper and incredibly sticky.

That's what I thought.

Putting some wear on it first could work but new grip tape is really abrasive.

Thank you gents, you did most of the talking for me. Apart from keeping my hands intact, my other concern is having glue creep into the Spirit's locks and springs. I put some tape for tool handles someone gave on a hammer I keep in the car and I noticed that the way it is it could (will) give me blisters and that some glue had come out, probably due to heat, and was making a mess    :-\

I've removed deck grip with a hairdryer but that is the only time I've seen the glue move.

Gotcha :salute: Now to see if I can source some locally. Alternatively, I was looking at stairs grip but that is too coarse also.

Any ideas on how to put some wear on there?

Tap it with a hammer or rub it with some wood or a screwdriver or similar. Apply the tape and let it sit under pressure a day or two first, then work on the wear.

Tap it with a hammer! I might just go for it, thanks. :drink: My only concern is how to remove the thing if I'm not happy with the results.

Put it in front of a heater or under the grill for a couple minutes.

I guess I could heat it with a candle too if necessary.

Hmm, I might just give this a try

A paint scraper would work as well.

Just to be clear, deck grip doesn't like bending around corners so it will work best on the flat.

A paint scraper would mar the smooth finish on my precious Spirit though. I was thinking of putting thin stripes on the narrow part of the handles, I think it would be more useful there. There are curves there though.

Sharp paint scrapers don't mark.

IMO the wider the stripes the better. I doubt they will work on the narrow parts. Not skater deck grip anyway.

the vinyl I used is 3M and not laminated. It's what we use as decals to adhere on textured surfaces like concrete walls and wood. Adhesion of this material is superb. :D

So far, I think it helped in making that sort of sharp edge feel on the wave handle a bit tolerable vs one that is bare metal. It somewhat rounded the edges a little bit to the hand and helped a bit on gripping the wave since it's matte black.

I haven't tried Grip tape and not sure how they will wrap well underneath the edges. But this one is thin enough to wrap it under the edge without interfering with the tool access.

:D cheers!

^^^ So, you used those strips to reduce palm strain rather than improving grippiness. Not really what I was looking for. Thanks anyway

I learned a few things anyhow. Now I looked up 3M vinyl tape, went to their website; they have strips for changing your car's colour ???
