Questions about metal saws...?
on: October 27, 2015, 07:24:59 AM
Hello!

I want a metal saw with eventual use for wood  :gimme:

The Wave's file is also a metal saw?
Apart from the Surge, with his jigsaw holder, has Leatherman any metal saw?
Is the Victorinox metal saw the best?
Is it possible to modify a Victorinox saw to fit it into a Leatherman?
Can you cut a little bolt or cable with it?
Only for soft metals or steel too?
Any recommendation?

Thank you in advance guys? :salute:

The leatherman file has notches on the top that can serve as a metal saw in a pinch but I wouldnt like to cut any massive steel bars with it :)
The Victorinox is basically the same, it will cut metal but not at any rate that will be satisfactory.
With wood you would need the patience of an angel and endurance of a sled dog.
But why would you? The Wave has a wood saw.

For the Wave/charge there is this piece that is designed to fit into the lanyard attachment on the Leatherman Wave / Charge to fit any standard shank jig saw blade, metal, diamondcoated, wood
It costs 24€

the file on the wave/charge is for wood on a side, metal on the diamond coated and it's also a metal saw. Not the best one you can find bet you can cut 3mm nails with it.
The victorinox metal saw is more aggressive in my opinion.

Mextreme: i already saw this accessory, but on the sell page, there was an advisory as it wasn't very strong as it wasn't melted , any feedback?

I can only say two things about the Vic saw.. it can cut through pretty thick stuff, including hard-ish steel. I didn't use it much, but it went through a pretty thick window corner. Used the OG SuperTool saw to go through a padlock latch:

The LM ST300 file/saw is pathetic.
The Victorinox swisstool etc. ones are better.

It is 3D printed stainless steel. In my work I 3D print a lot of metal and when done in a good machine by knowledgable people it is quite strong. Stainless steel objects are printed in a hybrid of stainless steel infused with bronze. This is the hardest of all the 3D materials.

I would say it is on the limit but with some consideration of that, it should work. The weakness I would say is that the saw is better supported on the push stroke than pull stroke by the handles, while most blades are designed to cut on the pull stroke, but if you take care and not twist and bend it should work.

My preferece for file is the Wave file with diamond coated side as what I mostly use is to smoothen metal edges and for that, there is no comparison.
I never use them to saw metal since they are too fat and to short to do any good job, this is one tool I don´t hesitate to go for the real thing since any 50 cent thin bladed dedicated hacksaw (I use Bahco Sandflex) blade outcut a multitool in a factor of 20, while to smoothen small sharp edges or sharpen stuff, they are good.
Should yo end up in a McGyver situation where yo need to saw your way out you could probably make do with either.
I would choose the better file.

Super Tool 300 EOD has a blade exchanger that takes jigsaw blades, and comes with a metal saw (note: does not fit surge file or saw).
Are you wiling to drop the coin for one, is the real question.

Word to the wise, if you decde to get a ST300 EOD on fleabay, the last few ive seen advertised on auction as the EOD version were actually either normal BO ST300s, or modded BO ST300s with the EOD plier head swapped onto it.
