Traveling from the UK in 1914 - how many days it took
on: December 01, 2015, 11:05:07 AM

The map shows how long it took, in days, to travel to various countries from the UK in 1914.
Days have become hours now.

Interesting looking map. Thanks!   :tu:

Was looking for a modern version and couldn't find one. Apparently air travel has brought almost every place within a couple of days.

One time for a NATO exercise we flew from North Carolina to Kazakhstan, Russia in about 21 hours if memory serves. It was non stop with like two or three mid air re fuels. At the time it was the longest Airborne operation in history.

Kazakhstan, Russia in about 21 hours if memory serves.

Kazakhstan hasn't been a part of the USSR since 1991 - jeez, you're old, mate.

Sounds about right.

It was during my first enlistment from 1988 to 1992.

Honestly stuck in the back of a cargo aircraft you have no idea it is happening. Which is probably for the best.

Interesting looking map. Thanks!   :tu:

Was looking for a modern version and couldn't find one. Apparently air travel has brought almost every place within a couple of days.

You can get from the UK to Australia in around 24 hours flight time (plus stops for refuelling, connecting flights, etc), so the advent of long haul flights affordable by the average person has really changed everything in that regard.

Now the longest travel times will be down to where you cannot fly more than where you can - you can get pretty much anywhere in the first world within about 36 hours, but once you start moving away from there the travel time will ramp up massively - flying between smaller and less regularly services airports, and having to use things like trains, busses or cars to do larger journeys to get to your end point. Getting to one of the main ovulation centres in South America will be easy, but getting from there up to the more remote areas in the Andes or out into the less populated areas will be where your time will vanish.

We may have a world spanning transport networks nowadays, but if you want to get to the South Pole, you are still going to be facing quite a trek...

It may well take me 5 hours rather than the previous 5 days to get to the Med, but it still takes me 5 weeks to decide what to pack

Maybe 100 ft pictures would be a better idea.

Tanning salon? Nah! I generally come back as pale as when I went anyway  :P

Didn't take that many pics actually. Rarely do  Saves carrying a camera around. If i want reminders of where I went, I'd rather just go back there  :D
