LM Dongle: quick review
« on: April 01, 2019, 06:24:36 AM »
I was browsing the Leatherman site for a bit extender when I found this:

I had not seen this before, but it looked interesting so I popped a black one in my basket and hit check-out!

I'd forgotten I had ordered it until it arrived today.  He's a quick review.  I'll give it some pocket time and post a more comprehensive review later.

There are four pieces, a keyring that works as a handle for the dongle.  The dongle itself, which accepts standard LM slim bits.  The pack came with a double ended Phillip and slotted bit included -- probably the most useful one to start with, but if you are serious about using the dongle you'll probably want a full set of LM bit.  There's also a lanyard but no pocket clip.  Quality and finish is up to usual LM standards, i.e. feels nice and solid.

The dongle assembles easily.  There's a gate in the keyring that lets the dongle and lanyard slide in.  Once in the dongle moves around the keyring, but locks into position at certain points.  I tried it out on a few screws and you can generate a large amount of torque.  I think the dongle should also fit the regular LM bit extender, if you need extra reach.  When finished, the dongle folds inwards and becomes very pocketable.  At 15g the dongle, handle, lanyard, and double ended flat bit weigh 20 times less than a Surge!  OK, you don't have the cutting blades, pliers, scissors, flat heads, can opener, and blade exchanger, but apart from that you still have a pretty useful tool.  There's also a cap-lifter function, but I don't have any unopened beer bottles around so cannot test it yet, however, I guess that extra function qualifies it as a multi-tool!

You should have changed the price.  :D

It's an interesting idea actually. How to buy a swisstool and still have the use of LM bits.  :D I'd constantly lose the bits though.

Sure this isn't an April Fools joke?   On another note, this seems like a product that Leatherman would be able to make and sell for cheap.   The keyring and lanyard attachment wouldn't cost much to source, and the bit driver is what, a standard Wave driver they're already making? So, no new parts to have to produce to have a new item that would be quite handy.  I actually have a strap cutter/bottle opener/screwdriver  tool from a small Ruike (which the scissors were bad on, I took apart to remove, and then forgot how to put it back together) on my keys, and the ring really makes it easy to use to cut stuff.

After gving the Dongle some key-ring and pocket time for a year now, I like it even more.   But I still have not figured out the bottle caplifter function.  :D

I guess you'll have to place the keyring around the edge of the cap and then swiftly pull at the lanyard for liftoff  :pok:

Btw, did you try using the bit-extender with it?

You know, most of the stuff we make up would actually sell better than the stuff that Timmy creates.

Imagine him doing that secretly with a new startup just for fun to give his successor a little headache here and then  :D
