Peanut Lighters

Imagine it, I'm terribly lost in the woods, sun dropping along with the temperature. I have stumbled onto a perfectly built fire with seasoned split logs stacked next to it and tinder alllll over. I luckily have my peanut lighter, completely filled, so I'll be good and warm that night right?..... Indeed, but only because the anger and rage inside will keep me nice and warm :facepalm:

I cannot for the life of me get this foolish thing to light, it wouldn't be so bad if I didn't like it so much. It's such a convenient thing to have, but it wont do me any good! Sparking up a storm, but it just wont light and it drives me insane. Am I alone with this problem?

Maybe try wetting the wick with the fluid to "prime" it.  Try lighting it with another lighter to see if it will hold a flame.

Can you spark the peanut lighter with another lighter?  I don't have a clue what's going on with that daggone thing.  Maybe the flint doesn't throw hot enough sparks is what I'm thinking  :think:.  Tip it upside down to let the wick soak fluid?

Try pulling the wick out a bit and cutting off the frayed top. Maybe it's burned out its usefulness and a fresh part of the wick has to be pulled out.

As to getting the peanut running right, I'd follow enki's advice, pull through some fresh wick and trim off the old. If you had a huge flame on it before, that might have helped cause the problem (wick damage after extinguishing - had that on Zippos where the wick was too long), so try leaving less exposed wick this time.  :tu:

To light my fires, I just use matches and a small hand sanitizer bottle of lighter fluid, and it never hasn't worked!

I love lighter-fluid lighters, but I wouldn't count on it when it becomes a necessity.  I read about them failing/leaked/evaporated once in a while, and it has happened to me in the past.  Since the peanut sized lighter holds a lot less fuel, I guess one trick is to keep it away from any warmth to slow the evaporation.

I had a couple Zippos but since I don't smoke a mini bic or standard size disposable lighter is best for me.  Those little peanut lighters are awfully cool tho.

All this is good advice. Trimming the wick is a good practice also. The wick's tip gets so carbonised after some use it no longer brings fuel to the surface.  :drink:
