Digging through the pile, again....
on: November 12, 2015, 05:28:45 AM
Digging through the pile again after reading about the Space Program Vics...

Remembered I had 4+ rangers in the box so I looked again.

Is this a 1.4763 Master Craftsman like I think it is? (crummy indoor pics)

The Phillips is a can key as well.

I think it falls between '86-'91.

Please contribute thoughts & info please.

Nice one SG!  :tu:

I think your assessment is right, maybe even as early as '85. SakWiki has an error on the MC page, the chisel has been included since '85, my early SC's all have a chisel. I would guess on the early side of the '85-'90 range. :salute:

Dig some more!  :pok:

I think it falls between '86-'91.

Please contribute thoughts & info please.

I can't see the tang stamp, but I have several MCs from this era so I'll make an educated guess - this should have the 4 line stamp with the big "V", which would date it somewhere between 1987-1991. While the chisel did come out in 1986 with the introduction of the SwissChamp, most of the smaller knives (MC, Ranger, Champion) don't seem to get it until 1987 or later.

1986 is an interesting transition year that can usually be identified by the combo of a small "v" stamp + awl with sewing eye (91mm only). With the exception of the SwissChamp, every 1986 knife I've seen that would later get the chisel is still chisel-free in 1986. I have a Champion, Ranger and MC all like this. Interestingly, these models DO get the new fine screwdriver that was also introduced with the SwissChamp. So they end up being kind of a one-year transition model.

The newly arrived pile has yielded another Master Craftsman. A later one I think with large "V"SSR stamp, plain scales and 5 backtools (Philips, chisel, new fine screwdriver, hook, awl). I have seen Space Shuttles with this backside toolset but wearing the Shuttle scales. This has plain scales. Pics when I'm able.

So what about this one JB, a 90-91 transitional model?    (added crummy pics)

Hard to tell from the pictures. My first impression is that it's a 93-98 model with riveted scissors and the 45 degree crosshatch grind on the metal file, but I can't really see either feature very well in the pictures. You take this from your flip phone? :)
