timekeeping after 1 month
on: November 24, 2015, 06:18:57 PM
One month ago winter time started, so I had to adjust my watches to the winter time.
At the time they all were set to the GSM network time, give or take a minute or so.
So, 1 month on, how are they doing?
All are using quartz/electronics to keep time

The correct time is shown on my phone, 16:35, in the smaller, detailed pictures. (There is also an earlier photograph to show the set-up)
The only one with a noticeable/serious deviation was the blue GW5600 lookalike, which was  nearly 10 minutes wrong.

The rest, even the really cheap ones, did very well. The ones that are not shown in the pictures were also OK.

Even the one that was 10 minutes wrong was still not that bad, especially if you were to compare it with what was considered accurate a few decades ago.

There are several reasons why I only buy fairly cheap watches (with the exception of one):

1) They cost less  :P

2) They work perfectly well enough most of the time. Very rarely have I found a cheap watch that wasn't accurate enough for me.

3) You don't get upset if you scratch, break, lose it.

4) Often the cheaper watches are actually easier to read if I don't have my glasses on. It seems the more expensive the watch, the fussier the display is, or the more subtle it is. Cheap secondas, timex, lorus and the like are typically better in this regard

Buying more expensive watches, is for me at least, counter productive. The most expensive watch I own is a gold plated mechanical pocket watch which only comes out of it's box on formal occasions. And no, I can't read it without my glasses on.....

I adjust any watch that has drifted more than four or five seconds, and then I adjust it to sub-second accuracy. (NTP + software I have written to ensure displayed seconds are correct within a few 1/100 of a second. Screen update, task scheduling, blablabla places strict limits...) People are pretty different... :)

dks: A few decades means three or four to me, and 10 minutes in a month would be 20 seconds drift a day. That certainly wouldn't qualify as accurate neither in the 70ies or 80ies, at least not as I remember them. I must admit my memories of the 70ies are pretty limited and don't involve watches much, though. ;)

Comparatively....  ;)

If I needed a new watch, my price limit would usually be about £30. I might be wrong on one of those brands though as it's a while since I looked around

20s a day is OK for automatics.
I remember in the pre-quartz days when people would have to regularly adjust their watches, using the tv clock, town clocks, the talking clock...

50, casios start cheap too
