Hiraethus's December Surge challenge thread

I've had this Surge for a few months now and it's not had that much use - I've always found it a bit big for the kind of things I generally need a multi for.  My normal EDC is a small SAK in my pocket with a Spirit in my bag, so this is a bit of a change for me.



The adaptability of the was what attracted me to it in the first place - the metal file and interchangeable bits are very useful for both work and home for me.  My Surge has the file, a PZ1/PZ2 bit and the pocket clip so I can clip it to my back pocket (I don't really like sheaths, and it's waaaay too heavy to drop in my pocket like I would a SAK).  In the bit kit I've got the metric hex, torx, phillips and a couple of flat bits.  I'm also carrying the woodsaw and a Bosch hacksaw blade.

Halfway through day one and it's not been very challenging so far; peeling some pears for breakfast and removing a circlip from a prototype at work is as exciting as it's got. :)





My boss did borrow it to cut the strapping off a box that had been delivered and said how lethal the blade looked.  I must admit, the Surge blade does look particularly wicked when compared to a nice friendly SAK.  That might be the biggest challenge for me, TBH. :-\

Surge pliers are a little big for this kind of work. :-\

Quiet day for me and the Surge (do I have to come up with some kind of superhero name for it? :think:), but it coped admirably with slicing bananas for breakfast, cutting some cheese for a snack, opening my calculator to de-gunk some sticky buttons and packing my gift for the Christmas pool.  Long weekend off coming up, so will get stuck into some jobs around the house with it. :tu:

It sits better in my front pocket and I don't notice the weight so much now. Still a great big lump of a thing though.

Friday night modding, using the diamond file.  It's very nice. :tu:

Didn't get used for much else today, spent most of it with the boys and there was little multitool action required.

Day at the zoo with the kids today.  Took the Surge, but didn't fancy using the knife to cut cake in a cafe crowded with kids.  Did use it to cut veg for dinner though:

Day off today, went to IKEA - mostly for the vegetarian meatballs  :drool: - but we got some flat pack crap for the house too. Put the Surge to work with my eldest assembling a stool. :tu:

The bit driver was a bit flexy on some of the tighter woodscrews but worked OK. The awl is great and worked really well for starting some of the little woodscrews.

After a little over a week, the weight is not so bad.  Pocket carry with the clip is a little awkward, as my keys and light get caught up underneath it.  But it's ok, and very adaptable. :tu:

Aaaannnndddd I'm out. I like the Surge, but not enough to have it as my only tool for a month - it's just a bit too big for my day to day use. I've gone back to a SAK in my pocket, with a Spirit in my bag.
