Castaway---SAK sighting
on: January 25, 2009, 09:49:10 AM
I don't know how I missed this before but Tom Hanks aka Chuck Noland on Castaway has a SAK attached to his keys. It looks like a Spartan or maybe a Tinker, but it stays with his girlfriend since he leaves his car keys with her just before boarding the plane. He gets the car keys back with his SAK still attached when in the garage of his girlfriends home during the rainy sequence towards the end.  :tu:

OK, so the SAK does not get much air time and it only gets a little use at the very beginning of the movie when he opens that long package in Russia. Just thought I would mention it.  :salute:

Too bad he did not have it while on the island!

Wilson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   :cry: :ahhh  :cry:

Advert or no, it was a fun movie. :)  Side question: as an actor, how much weight do you suppose Tom Hanks had to lose between the beginning scenes and the island scenes? :o

I agree, a great movie!  :tu:  It was just funny how they squeezed in the Fedex logo on some scenes.  :D

Yeh, I wonder how much Fedex paid in "support" fees? :D

Interesting thing about that movie, they had to stop the production of the film for one year so Tom Hanks could grow out his hair and lose 50 pounds.  And supposedly, FedEx didn't pay a single penny to be in the film.

I would have guessed about 60 pounds or so, but according to IMDB.com and the previous reply to this thread;

Production was halted for a year so Tom Hanks could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island. During this hiatus, Robert Zemeckis used the same crew to film What Lies Beneath (2000).

Another interesting tidbit of trivia from that movie that is taken from IMDB.com was this;

Actual lines of dialogue were written for Wilson the Volleyball, to help Hanks have a more natural interaction with the inanimate object.

I am thinking about making a "Wilson" ball for my office.  :pok:

FedEx was used as the metaphor for the "global economy". :think:

Good call there!! :tu:

But I'd definately question FedEx's"air wing" on this film :ahhh

Old thread, I watched the movie again last week and I've noticed the SAK as well but it's not a Tinker, it has a corkscrew and it seems to have two layers and it also seems a little too big to be a Spartan, I think it's a Tourist, now that I have one I can see it in my hand etc. it seems the same size.

I watched it again earlier this year, and noticed the SAK. (Didnt notice it the first time I saw it many years ago) I liked the way he looked at the SAK at the keychain when he got it back. You could see him think "that would have been nice to have on the island, but I didnt. " (or maybe Im just overthinking it :D)
