So umm SOG?
on: December 13, 2015, 03:34:21 AM
Just poking my head in here to. Was curious about SOG products and specifically the Switchplier.

Have heard talk of quality issues across the company. Any validity?

For the time being, all of their multi tools are top notch, wiyh the exception of the PowerDuo, which was not very popular, due to QC concerns.

I love my Pocket Power Plier, and my currently jawless Powerlock is good too (hard to be great with a missing plier head though).

Get the Switchplier :pok:

I do MT.org on my phone, and got a call at that point. Not sure why it saved, instead of just staying in editing mode though

I recently got the Blacktip.
In short I have multiple problems with the outside opening handle.
I'm guessing the powerassist has the same smurf although I have not bothered to confirm that yet.

I do have a preloved switchplier here.
While I can't use it until next year I can say spring loaded pliers are candy floss.

If I was to try another it would have to be a powerlock.
Anyone out there selling one cheap let me know.

The powerduo had serious quality/design/execution problems
There were also concerns regardig the pliers pin of the micro toolclip.
The exchangeable tools are a nice idea but keep in mind that because of this the size of them in large or small SOGs is the same. Like using the same size tyres in all cars.

Agree with all the above.

PowerDuo, stay away!
Power assist, way too complex.
Power lock, a fine large tool but with same implements from smaller tools.
Paratool, interesting design, good form factor.
Power pocket pliers, very slim and compact, watch out for gear of madness.
Switch pilers, a fine tool, but it doesn't fit in to my EDC system.
EDC: Black Talon, Black Cat, Spirit, LD02

I have a powerlock, switchplier, powerduo, and a crosscut. Quality wise they are all good (yes even the powerduo) you can swap out tools for the switchplier but only in a certain order because of how the pliers fold down. I like the unique design of the power duo but it is bulky and limited in tool set. The crosscut is ok. And the powerlock just joined the family so I'm not sure where it will fall at.

Love the Powerlock! Switch Plier is a great one too. The Paratool is just straight up bad ass. Also SOG makes some sweet knives. Keep in mind they make entry level/beginner/beater knives and some high end knives. SOG usually makes there folders ambidextrous also. They also use glass filled nylon a lot for the scales and handles and the stuff is tough as nails and wears like iron. The blades will show wear before the GFN does.

This is not the correct answer! :D Lol, seriously though - you should give SOG a chance. If you go PPP or PL, I doubt you will be disappointed. Especially PPP. Do some hunting around on EvilBay and you can score a great deal on a solid tool.

I think you should get a SOG and carry it for a while to get a first hand perspective of WHY you're probably right about sticking to other tools that already work for you. No good being right, unless you fully appreciate why.

Yes but it has a couple advantages:
Better fit and finish
Customizable tool set
Compound leverage
Angled pliers head.
Very quickly you can flip the tool inside out to access the internal tools.
Sheet metal handles are exposed just like PST but they are rounded off nicely so less painful.
I find early Leatherman with exposed handle very painful to use its pilers, like PST, Sideclip etc.
