Portable Fridge....
on: December 17, 2015, 09:00:48 PM
Alright, maybe a weird one for the crowd here.

I know you all like your fanny-packs (bumbags for those that speak the Queens)
clips, super-light kit etc etc..

but some of us go out Heavy.

For those with Rigs (ZORT or otherwise)
How do you roll, keeping cool wise?
I don't know about the Euros, but in Oz (and I'm sure parts of US), having cool water is a necessity, and a few cold meats and cheese doesn't hurt either :P

So whaddya got in your truck, campervan, or tricycle that keeps your drinks cold and your sandwiches fresh?

I have a 39L Autofridge that has been running strong for 20 years, but last I heard they are no longer making new ones.

I'd recommend something with an efficient compressor (Danfoss used to be the top dog, dunno whether they still are or not), and running as a eutectic also adds to the efficiency, as does thick insulation and an inbuilt fan.  Add in a durable exterior and interior, locate somewhere with good ventilation and out of the sun and your good to go (but probably with a significantly lighter wallet).

Insulation is key.  Trying to get the cooler protected from all sides especially the lid will aid in keeping your food and beverages cold.

What I do for starters is freeze water bottles as my ice.  I prechill all foods and drinks that will go into the cooler.  Line the cooler with reflective insulation especially the lid since most lids don't offer a great seal.  I keep beverages separate from foods because the beverage cooler gets opened more often.

Try to pack items flat so more surface area is exposed.  What makes the higher end coolers better? Insulation and better sealing lids.
